  1. after all of this time it is in fact the filter being too small for the pump. I have the smallest sand filter that hayward makes apparently (S160T). I'm replacing it with a larger one this weekend. Thanks for all of the help.
  2. makes sense. so maybe the filter isn't big enough to keep the water moving fast enough for the pump? would you suggest that I get a bigger filter? other than not having a full pump basket, which I assume is not good for the pump, everything runs fine. my water is clear and I have a good water rotation. the pipe is 1.5 the pump came with 2 and 1.5 adapters.
  3. I bought the pump on sale a couple of years ago. I actually got the 2 HP pump at the advice of a pool store employee. maybe they needed to get rid of some inventory or something... is it possible that the pump is too big for my pool? I have your typical 70's style rectangle pool. main drain, skimmer and 2 jets on opposite ends of the pool. I changed the sand in the filter 3 years ago. other than that I had to replace some parts in the valve. wouldn't a blockage in the return line cause the water that is coming from the pool to fill up the pump entirely? or maybe the pump will only pull in as much as it can pump out right now. poolclown - I didn't understand what you said about removing a restriction. I might also add that when I shut off the skimmer line and run only off of the main drain, I see quite a bit of cloudiness enter the water. It's almost as if there is chlorine or some other chemical getting backed up somewhere and running off of the main drain only starts breaking it loose. I know that makes very little sense but it's something I've noticed. my filter is the Hayward Pro Series Sand Filter S210T
  4. I forgot to mention that I just replaced the multi valve gasket, spring, washers and cover o-ring. I've had the problem for almost a year though. I have also replaced the PVC from the filter to where it meets the ground because I had an old auto feeder inline that I thought might be causing the problem (return side).
  5. Sorry, I couldn't think of a better thread title at the time I have a problem that I just can't figure out. My pump isn't operating at full capacity when my filter valve is in the filter position. When I have it set to backwash, rinse or waste the pump is full of water with hardly any air bubbles showing at the pump cover. Once I move the valve to the filter position I start seeing more empty space between the pump cover and the water within the pump which tells me that the water is not returning into the pool as fast as it could be. I have no idea why though. I would normally assume an air leak, but where? And why does it run at full capacity when I have it at backwash, waste or rinse? I just bought a new pressure gauge and the pressure is 15-20 when backwashing/rinsing and goes up to 20-25 when filtering. I don't see any water leaks. I have an inground vinyl pool, appx 30,000 gals. Waterway SVL-56S 2 HP pump Hayward filter any advice would be appreciated. thanks!
