  1. here in pa we have steel, cement, and fiberglass walled pools installed. The bottom line is the installer and the job they do. We have always done the steel wall pools which are faster to build than cement and never had a problem with any. If a pool is installed correct you should not have any problems. I would think stainless steel panels in the long run would outlast cement being in contact with the ground, but again I do not know what they do to the cement walls to protect them. My concern is actually steel in the ground trapped within the dirt and moisture. Figured cement basements have been built for eons. While the steel is galvamized, that really only slows down the deterioration. I would seriously consider Concrete- Today's concrete is even better than that of years ago (getting back to the foundation analogy.) The question should be to use gunite or shotcrete? This article explains it pretty good. One of the top pool contractors in Orange county California Alderete Pools (you can tell by their portfolio) uses gunite. Good Luck and happy swimming. gunite vs shotcrete comparison article Is there a reason not to use Stainless? No not at all - Although Stainless is preferred over Steel (even galvanized) As it is a zinc coating that prevents the galvanized metal from rust but scratches and dings can sometimes cause problems far down the road. A high quality stainless steel will work great, be sure the get a high grade- (you've all seen Stainless cutlery with rust) Concrete allows for more variety in design as it can be completely customized, with curves, sunshelves, steps, seating etc.. Stainless steel is a great choice for a nice pool. Anything that gets you soaking in the sun is better than nothing. Price is also a big factor so compare prices and see what fits the budget.
  2. To find a good certified pool designer/contractor check with pool designer/contractor They have a listing of some of the best Swimming pool companies around. And they can even help you track one down if there is none listed. Best thing is many of the companies have ratings so you can see what others are saying about them. Always contact a few companies and check references and do a "Google search" on the company at hand you'd be surprised what you will find.
