  1. I am looking to have a 45 year old pool renovated to include re-doing the lines. One company advised me that I don't really need a main drain. Anybody have an opinion on that? I have an 18 by 36 single roman with a depth of 3 in the shallow and 9 in the deep end...
  2. I am looking to update my pool as well. Same situation, years of no use by previous owner. It was built in 1963 and also is about 9' in the deep end. It's a single roman shape- so basically an 18' x 36' rectangle with rounded courners and a half circle set of steps in the shallow end. I'm in Western New York... The pool is structurally sound, but looks pretty tired with cracking tiles and very worn marcite. I had it acid washed and replaced small amount of tile and got creative with some concrete paint and the color matching machine at home depot for some other sections of the tile. Again, works great (orig filter and heater as well)- looks it's age. I've had two companies out and the reno looks to be in the 20-30k area. Included is new cantalever decking (4f), new tile, pebble tec (or comparable) finish and new lines (see below). On older pools they recommend redoing the lines (plumbing). They will basically cut into the concrete and relay lines to the skimmer, main drain, vacuum hook-up and water features. They did tell me they could fill in the deep and to make it a depth of my choice- but I think I'll stick with what I have. Finishes are another choice. Marcite is white and lasts 10-15 years. Some of the new stuff, like Pebble Tec can stretch the finish life to 30 if properly maintained. There's alot to be considered, so do some research and have a few companies come out.
