  1. Hello Everyone,

All the modifications I'm about to mention was done to an Easy Set 18 X 48 pool and filter system. Any modifications done to any other brand or size may have undisired results and have not been proven.

My wife and I has had an Easy Set 18 X 48 round pool since the year 2000. They are good pools except for the filter system which is just not enough flow to clean the water. Our first pool had a 3000gph pump and done well but a surface skimmer was not available at the time so I made one that looked pretty good with outstanding results. Then the next year, Intex made one available. I came accross a new pool cheap so I gave out old one to my in-laws. The newer pools had pumps with lower flow which is a problem. So, Heres what I done this year.

Bought a 4000gph pump. Sharpened the grate in the intake with a smalll file. It is really thick and will greatly reduce the flow.

Bought the Deluxe Skimmer. Cut the flower looking strainer from the inside as it redices the flow also. I hard piped the skimmer to the fitting inside the pool using two 45s to get the right angle, a straight section of 1.5 PVC about 9 inches long for the deluxe skimmer. 8 for the old style. One 90 and one 1.5 to 1.25 bushing. That along with the strap that goes over the ring will provide a pretty solid mounted skimmer. I have the drawing if anyone wants to build one. just send me an Email.

Got rid of the Plunger Valves. I have always wanted to do this but couldn't find an easy way untill I got the 4000ghp pump. The fittings that go through the pool are slightly smaller. They are the same size as the hoses as they will screw straight on the pool. I was able to buy a 1.25 inch PVC compression coupler, cut it in half, modify its square threads to "V" threads and the hoses will screw right on it. I made the peices fit into one end of the 1.5 PVC ball valve. The other end of the valve got a long turn street 90 that was mofified to accept the screw collars that are on the plunger valves. The design has been working for over a week now with great results. I can tell a bunch of difference in just one week. Dirt was settling at the bottom before but not now. If you live in the south, You know what I mean. Red Mud!!!!

I'm waiting on my automatic cleaner that should work well. ( If there is anything left on the bottom) I bought a Lil Shark cleaner. I have seen one in action that a freind of mine has. Its not a wall climber it keeps the bottom scrubbed clean. I dont see any use in upgrading the pump unless you get rid of the plunger valves. They reduce the flow by far. I dont know how much but before I put my pool away for the winter, I will see.

Anyone may email me if they need any assistiance. I have tried much more than I described here. If anyone wants the ball valve conversion, I will make them and ship them for a fee. It wont be very cheap because it takes a while to do it. You will have to let me know if you have the blue or gray fittings. Hope everyone finds this usefull!!!!

    Can you show some pictures?

    Thanks,

    Ronald

  2. Just setup Intex 15' x 48" above ground pool and we opted for the swg.

    We have a similar setup.

I only added cyanuric acid (aka "stabilizer" or "conditioner") to slow down the destruction of the chlorine

through the sunlight. This will make the chlorine last longer and you can run the swg for less than 3 hours

a day (or it will produce too much chlorine!). I'm running my pump for 6 hours at night. That seems fine.

And get the AquaChek salt test strips.

    I hope this helps.

Also sort of the same setup here.

i run it 2 to 3 hours depending on the tempreture.

I don't use any chemicals and the water is fine during this season.

i did use salt teststrips but i find them expensive, i now have a digital salt meter.

It works perfect, found it on ebay (HM Digital TDS-4TM Tester/Meter, Salt+Temperture, Pool).

I run the pump for 6 hours.

Hi Ronald, I do appreciate your reply and sharing your experience will certainly help us. What type of swg are you using? And you don't have to add any other chemicals or conditioner to your pool at all? Just the salt. Sounds great. It sounds like the salt meter you purchased also tests the temp of your pool as well. Do you have your system set on two different timers? What time of day are you running the pump.

Thanks again for all the info, it's very helpful. Boy we didn't realize all the work a back yard pool would entail. It's good brain work though and we are having a ball enjoying the pool fun.

I am using the SWG from intex, the standalone.

The pup operates for 7 hours a day starting at 9 am.

The SWG runs 2 or 3 hours depending on the pool temp.

They both have their own timers, the SWG uses its build in timer.

Make sure you set the pump earlier then the SWG otherwise you get the message "90" in the display (no flow).

I don't use any other chemicals or conditioner .

The saltmeter works perfect and measures also the temp .

The season so far, everything ok no prolems with the water.

    So just salt.

  3. i us e the salt water generator from intex.

My pool is the same, a metal frame ultra pool 16x48.

You don't have to worry about the water ,once a week i test teh water and everything is fine.

It runs for 2 til 3 hours a day depending on the tempreture.

For cleaning the surface i use the deluxe set from intex and it takes about 20 min. to clean the pool.

This is much better than the thing that came with the pool.

It uses the pump filter as the filter.

  5. What is everyone's opinion on liner underlayment? There is the foam type and the geotextile type. The foam looks like it might rip and not protect against grasses or stones. The geotextile looks strong but might not work as well preventing footprints as well as the foam.

I live in a sandy area. I'm planning on scraping off the topsoil down to sand with a backhoe. Then taking out any noticable stones. I don't want to have to screen the sand. I did that on a previous pool and it is a tedious job. Plus over time the sub surface rocks still seem to work their way up. So this time, I thought about putting in pond liner geotextile for the rock protection, and then a layer of the foam for the footprint protection.

What about putting in both types? Is it overkill?

What about pond liner geotextile instead of the precut pads?

I'm wondering what other people have done, the end result, and if they are happy with the decision.

    Thanks

    i use,i don''t now the name (fake grass),works fine.

  6. I have a 16x48 ultra frame pool from intex with the saltwater system 8220 (standalone without pump).

    The system works super.

But make sure you have the right amount of salt in the pool, when there is to much or to less salt in the pool the SWG,gives an error and doesn't work.

In the manual it sas between 2.5 and 3.5 ppm the system works.

My pool had 3.3ppm salt and it didn't work.

After draining the ppol and adding fresh water the level was 3ppm.

    It works fine now.

No saltwater taste,no wrinkeld hands, hair is fine, badingsuits keep their collers,no red eyes when you open them under water.

I never have problems with my water,PH fine, chlorine level fine.

It is realy a good investent.

The only thing that i am ging to change next year is an other pump (sandfilterpump).

There seems to be a problem when you use the system at a temp. of 16 deg.cent. or below.
