  1. What is the generally accepted practice with regards to chemicals and winterization for fiberglass pool with salt water chlorine generator. I am a new pool owner and I have the installer set to winterize the pool (in Nebraska --- brrrr). Should I expect them to use an algecide, shock or some other chemical treatment? Pool has automatic cover as well. Thanks!

  3. New owner with salt water chlorine generator. I have read positive info on adding borax. I heard some expensive specialty pool salt may contain borax already but I am using pure solar salt. If I want to add borax is it just a one time deal (or add when adding new water) or is this something that is supplemented more often? Is there a good online pool calculator I can use to determine the amount to add? Do I need to get a test for it or can I just do the math, add it once and forget about it? Thanks!
  4. I diluted some pool water with RO/DI and tested again and it shows no chlorine. I will order the test kit but we are about to close the pool down for winter. Should I wait to get the test kit in the spring or will the reagents keep 6 months without worry? My thinking now is one of the following... 1) My generator is not working properly 2) Way too much chlorine and it is bleaching the results 3) No real problem, just the generator set to low. I set the generator to 40% and hopefully testing tomorrow will show it is number 3 thanks
  5. New owner of pool with salt water chlorine generator. I recently used the generator to shock the pool (100% for 24 hours). In the future I will use bleach but thats another topic. Anyway, previous to shocking the the FC level was 2 -3 with the generator set at only 10%. I assumed this was because we have an automated cover and the pool is always covered when not in use. The mystery is that 1 day after the shock (the generator is back to 10%) The FC level is zero on a dip strip (I know not very reliable) and about .6 on a drop test (cheap kind that turns yellow). I was expecting the FC level to be high because of the shock and not lower than it was before - and since I have a cover I really thought it would not dissipate so quickly. Salt 3200 ppm FC was 2 -3, now .6 CC ??? Not sure I was properly testing for this but thought it was basically zero CYA 40 ppm PH 7.6 Is is possible my CC was high and I burned it off with the shock and I was just not smart enough (or have good enough test) to tell me that it was a problem? The water seemed clear and there was not a strong chlorine smell. What else could be going on here? Also, what/where is a good test kit for pool parameters? Thanks
