Whats the best way to clean the scum line in a vinyl liner pool? Today I used a diluted solution of muratic acid and water with an sos pad. I hope everything will be fine. I really had to srub hard and it took about an hour and a half. Is this normal?

I guess I should start out by saying HI!! I am a new pool owner and have had my in-ground liner pool for about 2 months. So far, I have been able to keep my pool chemicals straight. The strip tests vary slightly from day to day but my question is this. I went to the pool store to get more chlorine tablets and in general conversation the guy told me that I should be shocking my pool once a week. Well, I haven't been doing this and was wondering if my chemicals are reading okay do I still need to shock it once a week? He said that it goes against all chemical history that I wouldn't need to shock. In my opinion and as for what I have been reading I don't think I need to shock it once a week. Am I wrong?
