It has been done before--taking a pool from swamp to swimmable without draining the pool. I suggest you hire a professional to do the work though. Before you commit to sanitizing your pool, have a pool inspector check your pool out. It may turn out that the liner needs to be replaced which involves replacing the water anyway. He'll also help you get familiar with the equipment and notify you of anything that needs to be repaired.
Good luck and congrats on the new house.

Thanks for your help. When you say "hire a professional" to sanitize and before doing that "have a pool inspector check it out" are they different? Does one work for a company and the other work for the county?

I have a contract on a house that was built in 1972. Not sure when the pool was added. The pool is 30 x 50 with a vinyl lining and mesh top. It hasn't been used in 4 years but there is still plenty of water in it (very nasty water) but enough to keep the pool from collapsing. Is it still possible to cleanse the water or must I drain the pool and refill? I've never owned a pool so any help would be appreciated.

Okay - I'm not computer literate. Just joined this site today and I don't see where to make a new post so just tagged on to this one. Sorry but can you help?
