  1. If you go to an RV parts dealer, you can buy a 12-volt water pump for about $30-$40 that will make quick work of the job. You can power it from your car, lawn tractor, or a loose car battery, if you have one laying around.

Might even get it cheaper from JC Whitney.

  2. often, the small sand filters don't have an air relief assy on top of the filter. In this case, you may have a small air leak somewhere on the pump strainer cover, or on one of the suction pipes. Eliminating the air leak can help cure the problem. Backwashing frequently can help as well, as it reduces the pressure build up as the water is pushed thru the filter.

Rock in the basket - while it sounds lame, it can work. Do not use anything metal as a weight, as it can cause corrosion.

I did check last night, and my filter (Hayward 150lb sand filter) does not have a bleeder valve. I will check the pump cover and the connections for the suction. Thank you.

  3. My solar cover *should* be delivered this week, and I have a few questions before I start using it. I have no idea if it will come with instructions, so I figured I'd ask here.

    1. Can I run the filter while the cover is on the pool?

    2. We currently use a floating chlorinator, will we have to switch to an in-line chlorinator once we start using the solar cover? I can't imagine the floater will be able to circulate very well with the cover on.

    3. Will the use of a solar cover have any effect on water chemistry?

    Thanks!

  4. Update...

I added the stabilizer over the weekend, and shocked the pool last night. I checked the FC about 2 hours later, and it was at the high end of the tester. I checked it again this morning and it's about the same. They're not calling for much sunshine this week, so I'm assuming that the level may take awhile to come down to proper levels.

  5. If your having back flow problems, It could be from an accumulation of air in the filter tank. Completely release the air from the filter tank (air bleed at the top), And make sure you get a steady flow of water (no air), then see if that solves the problem. If you cant get a steady steam of water, the pump may be pulling air. You're supposed to have a internal air bleed in the filter tank to bleed off air automatically. If you come back later, and bleed the tank again and there is air, Your bleeder isn't working. Probably just dirty.

I'll have to check that out tonight - thanks for the tip. I have noticed some air coming out of the return occasionally. I didn't notice an air bleed on the tank, but then again, I wasn't looking for one.

    Thanks again.

  6. Wow, thank you for the quick response!

The test kit I am using turns yellow in the presence of chlorine, so that would be an OTO kit, correct?

I'm 99% sure we were given the Cal Hypo shock to use. We did not add anything other than the shock, algaecide 50, and chlorine tablets.

The pool was filled with well water, so there should not have been any initial chlorine present there.

The pool is currently uncovered and in direct sunlight.

  7. We just had a new 19,000 gallon AGP installed. I finished filling it this past weekend, and as per the dealer's instruction, I shocked it (3 pounds), put in algaecide (10 ounces), and put 5 1" chlorine tablets in our floating chlorinator.

I've tested it each day since, and my test kit is not showing any chlorine reading at all. The water in the tester stays perfectly clear after the drops are inserted.

If it means anything, the PH is just about perfect, according to the same test kit.

Any input will be appreciated. Thanks!

  8. We just had our new above ground pool installed, and I've come across an issue. Each time we turn the pump off, a bit of water backs up into the skimmer and pushes the basket out of its "seat". Of course, when it does this, the baskets flips over and prevents the skimmer door from opening when the pump is restarted.

Any idea why this is happenning, and/or what I can do to keep the basket where it belongs?

    Thanks!

  9. My wife and I have decided to put up an above-ground pool this coming Spring. We have been visiting dealers for the past 2 weeks and gathering information on brands and prices. We have decided on a 27' round pool.

The 2 dealers we liked best thus far carry pools by AquaSphere. The models we are looking at are the Distinction (52") and the Mission (54"). Anybody here have any experience with this brand? We saw models of both pools set up in showrooms, and they seem to be well constructed - to our untrained eyes anyway. One of the models, the Mission, uses a resin bottom wall channel - any input on how well those hold up?

Any input or commnts y'all can offer on our choice thus far will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

    Frank
