  1. Can everyone chime in with average monthly bill while running pump about 10 hrs a day and average single family home with central ac during summer months. I just received $353 bill (I am in NJ) for last month. This is our first year owning the pool. I would like to get an idea what every one is paying.

P.S. I also have a booster pump for Polaris.

  2. I think they are big time scam artists. Did you work with guy named Joe Mcgrary? He ripped me for $1500 to just pressure test 4 lines. I have their address as Colonia, NJ. Are we talking about same company? I live in Edison.

I do alot of work in the area and have never heard of them and I've been doing this for over 20 years. And a pressure test of the skimmers and returns should be less then $200 if you have a main drain then its a little more for the diver

I have checked with lot of companies since paying him $1500 and every one is quoting anywhere from $200 to $400. I have a main drain but it can't be $1300 to test that, right? Also, he didn't finish the testing as he didn't check the pipes going out to Waterfall and it seems like that is what is causing the leak. Since I turned off the Fall the water loss is turned in to half. I am going to file a consumer complaint against this company. I don't think I am getting my money back but I want his name to be out there so no one else gets cheated.

Greg, Have you done any work in Edison area?

  3. This company has taken forever and not delivered. Thinking of sueing them and finishing the job myself. I live in metuchen NJ and this company is terrible. Be warned

  4. It could be the pump seal. Look at the motor shaft were it enters the plastic housing to see if it is leaking. A polaris 360 is made to be used without a booster pump too

Thanks for your reply. I will try to change the pump seal. How do I use Polaris without booster pump? What changes I need to make?

  5. Hi,

I have a Booster pump which is used for Polaris 360 pool cleaner. It is dripping little water continuosly. I changed the O ring in it but still the problem continues. Question 1) What else could be leaking the water? 2) Could it cause air surge in my pump (I have problem with air surge and it dropping the pressure.

    Please help!!!

  6. Hi All,

This is in continuation of problems I am having with the pool in first year of owning it. Some of you have really helped me in last couple months. Please help me here with this ongoing problem.

I am seeing bubbles come out of all return jets. When my water level is at the about half way or above to skimmer opening water pressure seems to be holding up ok at 16-17 psi. when water level is about 1inch in the skimmer box I see sudden drop in pressure. I have two skimmers and bottom drain do the suction. When pressure drops in above situation I turn off the suction from both skimmers and it returns the pressure to 16-17. In this case pump is only running on bottom drain but the bubbles are still coming. I know that when water level is low skimmer can suck the air and drop the pressure. My questions are 1) if I am only using bottom drain, why the bubbles are still coming? 2) How do I fix this situation?

Any help will be appreciated, even if you are just giving me a tip.

    Thanks in advance,

    PoolProblems

  7. I live at the west end of rt 78 and work at the east end of rt 78 in Union

Thanks!! I live in Edison, which is about 12 miles south of Union. I don't know if you can work if required, but if you can please send me your contact info.

  8. I asked a pool guy to come and look at the pool loosing water last week, he came and said he was doing pressure testing on the lines and charged me $1500 just for testing. I found out from other people later that it should not have cost more than $300-400. true? I feel like real idiot.

    Please advise...appreciate your help

Find a new pool company!!!!!!!! We charge $170 to pressure test a pool ( if a diver is needed to plug the bottom drain then its more)

    Greg,

I see you are from NJ, where in NJ?

  9. Dear Pool Problems!

I feel for you - there are quite a few things that can go wrong with a pool.

If your pump is leaking water it is likely to be the seal. You should get it fixed immediately - that is our rule, because anything to do with leaking water and electricity can be dangerous. If you are unsure about what you are doing, you should get it repaired by a qualified person - i.e. your pump repairer should be a qualified electrician, and have a proper test bench where he can set your pump up and test it.

If you go to your local pool shop, they should also have some adhesive to put the tiles back on. Basically it has to be one which can dry and stick even when the surface is wet. We have some amazing silicone in our store that applies and dries under water.

Leaks - can't help you much there - they are a diagnostic thing and can be expensive. Silly question from me - how much water are you losing out your pump? i.e. is this the problem??

Leak detection is a process of elimination. Since you will need to take your pump off for repair, let the water level drop, and then see where it stops. ie. if it stops at the skimmer box, then it is a leak in the skimmer or the pipework. If it stops at a pool light, theres your culprit, if it keeps going - it's your main drain...

Isolating the problem saves time and money, and skips expensive pressure tests if they are not needed!

Hope this helps, if not so much now - at least for the future!

Swim-In, Thanks for your detailed reply. Few answers to your points above not in particular order.

My not-so-reliable tester who tested the lines said all main lines are in good condition. One skimmer has little problem but he is saying it is not major and should not cause heavy water leak. My water leak stops right at the skimmer hole. (Bottom of rectangle). Reading your response makes me wonder something with the skimmers is causing it. As far as the leak from the pump, i see a wet patch near the pump and polaris motor. I am planning to take the pump to local store. When I fillup the water, it looses little over an inch a day till it reaches the bottom of the skimmer inlet and while pump is running.

For fixing the tiles, I luckily found some compound which previous owner had left under the deck and it seems like the one to fix the tiles in the water. I am going to use that and see.

Hopefully it gets better soon and we can use the pool. Learned lot of good things from amazing and helpful people here on this forum.

Yes, I am never calling that guy again. I got ripped..just bad mistake on my part to not confirm the price upfront..

  11. Hi All,

I am frustrated first time pool owner. In last month I have spent more money on this pool than I could have ever imagined spending in my entire life on swimming.

First important question, It seems like there is a water leakage when the pump runs near the pump. How do I fix it? I heard some one say I have to change the seal, if yes, how do I do it?

Also, it seems like there are few tiles coming off from the top row (it is a plastered pool with a tiled border near top). How do I fix those?

If I don't get this fixed in the weekend, ordering two trucks of sand to fill it in on Monday...

    Please advise...appreciate your help

  12. Depends on the company that is doing it. I charge a flat rate of $250 for lines and an xtra $75 if a diver is needed. That fee will then be absorbed into the price of the job if the customer uses us to fix it. If not then straight out billing. Some companies charge time and material. So w/e their rate is plus probly $50 surcharge if the use gas for leak detection.

    Thanks for the response.

  13. Any harm in having solar covers on the water while Polaris runs underneath?

What model polaris do you have?

If it one that the main body floats on top of the water and drags a bag. that would be a polaris 65,165 or turbo turle the answer is no.

If you have a 280,360,380, ATV give it a try.

If it is a 280,360,380 I would recommend reducing the whip hose action a little and pull the float head back about 1/4 of an inch. This will reduce the climbing affect of the cleaner

I have Polaris 360. I will try to adjust the whip hose action. Thanks for your reply. It seems like you are the one who regularly replies the posts here. I appreciate that. Being a first time pool owner it is a learning curve.

  14. I actually have a pool and I work at Leslie's Pool Supplies, and I might be able to help.

What kind of filter do you have? Since it has a multiport valve, it must either be sand or D.E.

Sand filters are almost spherical in shape, and D.E. filters are more or less cylindrical, and must be recharged with D.E. each time it is backwashed.

Also, what is the pressure reading of your filter? What is the normal pressure of your filter (if you know)?

Considering that you replaced the spider gasket inside of the valve and the fact that it is still leaking, I also need to know what you put on the gasket as far as lube or adhesive. Typically when I see this problem, the wrong material was put on it.

One more thing you may want to check is if the weir gate in the skimmer is not stuck shut. Sometimes a leaf or twig will get caught in the side of it and prevent water from getting into the skimmer quickly enough, and so a cycle starts: The pump drains the skimmer, loses prime, and stops pumping, then water seeps through the gaps on the side of the weir gate and fills the skimmer, the pump self-primes, and the process repeats. It may have just been a coincidence that this happened at the same time.

Check these things, and if you see anything else out of the ordinary, let me know, and I can help you find out what is wrong more easily.

    Hi there,

Thanks a lot for your detailed reply. Actually, I resolved this problem. Water level was down in the pool and it was sucking air throguh the skimmer. After we added water it worked like a charm. Pressure is 18 currently and stays there.

One question you may be able to help me with is, For vaccuming the pool there is a hose connection inside the skimmer basket. Once I attached hose there and other end to the triangular head and pole, do I need to adjust the suction using the valves before I can vaccum?

    Where are you located physically?

  15. Thanks for your reply. Water is upto the lower line of tiles row. Almost to the level of skimmer inlets.

The water needs to be half way up the skimmer inlets. It will stop sucking air.

You are the man!! It did the trick. I had a hunch that I should add water but for some reason didn't do it. As soon as we added some water pressure went right upto 18-19 and stayed there for about an hour I ran the pump. I will put it back on regular schedule from tomorrow morning.

Now, next question is how do I get out all the debries from bottom of the pool gathered during last week when filter was off.

  16. How much water do you have in the pool? Sounds to me that the surging is due to the skimmer sucking air. I dont know what type of skimmer basket you have but if it is an American Products, make sure the floating wier is not stuck in the up position. That would also cause the pump to cavitate. You can also close the skimmer line and see if that would resolve the prob. If all of that dosent work, the easiest way to tell where an air leak is, is to turn the pump off and watch closely. If there is an air leak you will see a spit of water, thats where the air leak would be. Most air leaks are in the suction male adapter, pump lid oring or valves on the suction side of the pump.

Thanks for your reply. Water is upto the lower line of tiles row. Almost to the level of skimmer inlets. Floating wier is not stuck. I will try your suggestion with the pump. One thing I also noticed was that when the pressure goes up for a minute and it starts flowing water, there are bubbles coming out of all the fittings (One like where you connect the vaccum).

  17. Hi All,

This is my first year owning a pool. We just moved into a new house with the pool. I had pool company guy open it 2 weeks ago and everything was working fine. On Last Sunday (25th) all of sudden pool pressure dropped and water wasn't flowing as smoothly. Not knowing what to do I switched off the filter and vaccum. While trying to find out what was wrong I saw that water was leaking through backwash pipe. I replaced the ring inside multiposition valve and it fixed the problem with water leaking through backwash. But, I still have very little pressure constantly. It will surge for few seconds and go down right back in few seconds. It doesn't flow constantly. I tried to get 4-5 different pool guys to come and look at it but they are so busy no even has come. All of them are telling me that some where air is leaking. I also replaced the ring on the vessel lid for pump. Any suggestions?

Ofcourse, I did the backwash as first thing when it stopped working.
