  1. I need to clean up some metal stains but read where I need to drop my chlorine to zero. I know chlorine will eventually drop but I'm not getting enough sun to eat up the chlorine this time of year I guess as it isn't going down very much. In any event I want to take care of this metal stuff now. Is hydrogen peroxide the best thing to use? Will I be able to bring it back up without alot of hassle? I have a salt water gunite pool. Thanks
  2. I'm not sure if you need any gasket grease, but I am having the same problem. One thing to check is that the O-ring is installed with the right side up. It isn't really an "O"...it is flat on one side. I just took mine apart again and cleaned the o-ring, the ledge on the bottom housing and the rim on the upper housing with soap and water, dried them all off, and put it back together. I didn't notice the rather large leak I had before, but the sides are wet and now it started raining so I'll have to check back later. I think in my case I just didn't clean it very well when I put it back together the first time. The pool is less than two years old...my seal looked good so I'm hoping that was the problem.
  3. Pressure gauge is out on my Jandy CL series. I've read where this is a common problem. Is the gauge itself typically the problem or should I replace the entire air-release assembly?
  4. If only it had stuck together nicely like a Baby Ruth.
  5. Something left a big pile of crap (literally) on my tanning ledge this morning. I'm not sure if it was a raccoon or what, but was wondering if there is anything special I need to do in this case to disinfect the pool? I scooped what I could out with a bucket, which was about as effective as it sounds like it would be, and poured in what liquid bleach I had on hand (3 gallons). Should I shock this or anything?
  6. This pool was built in January 2008 so it is only a lttle over a year old. Was the plaster not thick enough? And how big of a job would it be to correct if that is the problem? I'm wondering the likelyhood of the buidler taking take of it.
  7. I'm hoping someone can help me diagnose what is causing this and perhaps how to get rid of it. I have these off-white, rock-like formations forming primarily on my tanning ledge. They have little white "veins" running through/around them...kind of like some kind of pool crystal connect-the-dots game. I can scrape them off with my fingernail but a wire brush doesn't do much unless I put some acid in a squirt bottle and squirt it directly on it while I am brushing it. I got rid of them last year by dropping the pH very low but didn't want to do that again as I have a heater now and don't want to mess it up. The picture is not that good...I tried several angles and the crystals just didn't show up and you can barely make out the veins. Can anyone help me out with this?
  8. Thansk CG. This would be great solution if it works. I already ordered some and will give it a shot. To make sure I'm not barking up the wrong tree though, what I am referring to as "scale" are small, hard, off-white formations (usually about 1/8-inch across) spread randomly about my pool, most noticeable on the steps. Is this most likely scale? My CH stays at 350 but due to my CYA being low, my pH kept getting high which I think is the reason I got this. I tried unsuccessfully to find pictures of calcium scaling...I do not have a chalky white substance along the water line....just these little rock-like specs.
  9. Thanks for the responses. Is there a pH level that will loosen up the scale enough so I can scrub it off while maintaining a safe level for my metal components? What if I lowered pH to scrub the scale, then brought pH back up to normal pH level quickly (i.e. all in one day)?
  10. Beginning my second season of pool ownership...still feel like I'm lagging behind the learning curve. Anyway I have some scale build-up due top my pH getting out of hand. This happened last year and the pool builder told me to dump "alot" (5-8 gallons) of muriatic acid in the pool, leave the pump running, and scrub it every day and the scale will come off. I put about 4 gallons in there and the scale disappeared seemingly overnight on it's own. So the problem came back. I was planning on trying this again but wanted to see how harmful this kind of treatment is to my equipment. I have a salt water pool so wasn't sure if this would damage my salt cell or not? I read where it could damage heater components but I'm not running the heater at the moment. I read in the pool school the best way to remove scale is drain and acid wash but this MA shock worked really well last year. Am I setting myself up for a headache if I try this again? Thanks
  11. I decided to get a heater to extend the swim season. The guys who installed my pool are offering a Pentair Master Temp 400btu natural gas heater for $1550 installed. It was an open box item. My pool is 19000 gallons and I am planning to use the heater to warm it up 10-15 degrees or so in the spring and fall. Of course, I may end up using it in the dead of winter. I really just wanted to get some opinions on this particular heater and if it would be overkill for my needs. From their website, it looks like I could definitely go smaller, but would the 400btu heater heat it up very quickly, thus saving on my gas bill? I live in Texas. Summers are hot, winters are mild. It;s been nice out lately (in the 70's and 80's) but the water is still a little chilly (low 70's). Thanks
  12. This is a new pool and it is concrete. How long can I expect the finish to cure? And do I need to just keep adding MA to keep my pH in check until it does?
  13. I checked my TA yesterday and it was about 80 ppm. pH was about 7.8. Water is 63 degrees. I do have a salt water "chlorination" system and a waterfall, but no other areation features.
  14. Thanks for the reply Richard. I'll try to move this out of the garage. I have a plstic storage shed but it's not well ventilated plus it houses my lawn mower, weed eater, and other metal things so maybe I'll just leave it on the patio. How often should I need to add this to the pool? I've been adding about a gallon a week. Is this normal? My pH keeps moving up to 8 or so. It has been raining alot here lately...I thought that might have something to do with it.
  15. Hi everyone. I just got my first pool and have some questions about muriatic acid. I buy it from Lowes in the 2, 1-gallon plastic jugs. 1. As far as handling this stuff, am I ok to just walk around the pool pouring this in? Do I need to wear gloves or a long-sleeve shirt? A couple of times I've got my head in a "vapor cloud" and this stuff is nasty. Any kind of precations to take or just make sure I don't loiter in the cloud? 2. How should I open the bottles? I don't like using my finger to poke a hole in the lid so I've been using a stick or something non-metal laying around. 3. As far as storage, can I leave the plastic bottles in the cardboard box they come in or should I move them to a bigger plastic bucket with a lid (or no lid?)? A few years ago I had some stored just in the plastic bottles on a shelf and the corners of the shelf started rusting. I wasn't sure if leaving them in the cardboard boxes would have helped prevent this. And currently I just have this stuff on the cement floor in my garage. Is this ok? Thanks for the help. I feel like I'm being overly paranoid about this stuff but want to make sure I don't make a foolish mistake with it.
