Another update. The first guy who came out determined that it wasn't sand but algae. I don't know why he didn't tell me that but I need to know if there is anyway a person can mistake sand for algae. It only appears after the filter has been running. It is only on the bottom of the pool and it is brown. It makes rings around the pool, if you get my drift. Someone please help! I am fighting with these guys and they may be right but I can't help feeling like I'm being taken advantage of. Please someone comment and give me some guidance.

Someone please help me. I really need to know if there is anything else that could be causing sand to drain to the pool. That way I know what to say when I call these guys. I need to call them today. Thanks.

If the sand is getting back into the pool and the lateral or standpipe is still broken. You have to vac to waste which drains the pool. Also if they replaced the sand and put right to filter all the dust went into the pool. Backwash should be done first after changing sand.
Can you call another pool company or vac out the sand in the tank and inspect the lateral system own your own.
Hi, thanks for your help. I don't think it's a good idea for me to look in there but I was thinking of calling another company. However, it takes at least two weeks to get someone out here and in that amount of time the first company might say they are no longer liable.

I had sand blowing into my pool. From everything I read, I believed the problem was being caused by a broken lateral in my sand filter.
I called a local company and asked them to replace the sand and laterals. A guy came out and replaced the sand. He did not tell me what he did, he just gave me an invoice and I paid him.
The next day, I noticed more sand in the pool. I called the company back and reported the problem. They told me someone would come out to check the work and no one showed up. Apparently, the first guy did not notice any broken laterals. I asked that they all be replaced because another company suggested I change them all since I was going in there anyway. I don't know how that got lost in translation but decided not to make a big deal about it.
I called back about a week later and someone was supposed to come out that very night but did not show up until the next morning. I should add that that night it rained but still I received no call or notice. When they guy showed up the next morning, he did not tell me he was there, he just went into the backyard and did SOMETHING. I don't know what. He just left, did not say anything.
Now, there is still sand in the pool. Here are my questions:
1)What is the best way to remove the sand from the pool, so I can be sure it is not just the same sand resettling? SO far, I have been vaccuming the pool. But, as you can imagine, this can get tiring everyday.
2)Other than the laterals, what could cause sand to be blown into the pool? I don't want to call to complain if they really did what I asked and there is another problem.
3)Am I over-reacting? I really want my money back.

ok lade, this is how it works. Backwash runs the water the opposite direction through your filter and out of the pool, in order to clean the sand. Once this is done, you switch it to rinse. Run that for a few minutes also. This compacs the sand back down. Then you turn your valve to filter. Let it run. Sometimes 24 hrs.
So, if I understand you correctly, I need to put the filter on rinse to compact the sand back down and when I've done that the filter should prime again?

1) Cut your husband off until he starts helping - that's what my wife would do!
2) You need to address the leak but I wouldn't recommend a plumber - find a local pool builder or even a pool supply store and ask them to send someone out. Or call the leak detection company again. But I suppose you need to get your pool clean first... Finally, you can always contact the prior owner and ask who they used...
3) Is your pool green? You can add an algaecide, but most people here recommend heavy shocking -and by heavy, I mean lots of liquid bleach (regular household bleach or something like Vertex, which is twice the concentration) every day for several days until the pool clears. You should also vacuum and backwash at least once/day, every day, until the pool is clean. You can then get your water tested and start adding chlorine stabilizer (cyanuric acid, or CYA) and a flocculent or clarifier to eliminate the fine particles that the filter isn't removing. That's all down the road - but initial cleanup can easily take a week, even two. You've got to be patient and diligent - it will clear up, I promise. My pool was a green pond when I opened a month ago, but it cleared up after a week of regular cleaning and shocking - only took 90min/day.
4) Not sure why your backwash line is always open - you should have a valve atop the filter. Given your sand problem, you may also have a broken valve and a leak in the filter - possible the sand, leak and difficulty cleaning the pool can all be traced to the filter, and replacing that might be necessary. DE filters will remove finer particles than sand filters, but a good quality, properly maintained sand filter does just fine.
1) I would cut him off but then I have to suffer too.
2)The leak just went away! Weird, I know. But that is no longer an issue.
3)The pool is a little green now. I am sure that once I get the filter running again, I can clear it up in a day or two. I can see the bottom now and before I couldn't see a few inches below the surface.
4)When I say the backwash line is open I mean I don't have to do anything but turn the valve to backwash. I'm not real sure how to describe all of this stuff yet. I guess, I will replace the filter. I guess I can consider sticking with sand as they are less expensive and we don't use the pool that often.

Plumber.. dont think so.. But, i think some pumps required to be primmed... Did u try that..
Yes, I was trying to prime it but after several minutes no water was coming out. Should I just wait longer?

I should mention we've only been here a few months and this is our first pool.
Where do I begin?...It all started last fall when I went into the hospital to have a baby. Around that time we noticed a leak in the pool. Well, I called a leak detection company and they told me they would come out to look at it but that the pool needed to be clean. Believe it or not, I was responsible for keeping the pool clean and since I was going into the hospital soon I was not maintaining the pool. Well, I called to cancel because I actually went in a few days before they were to come out.
When I got home with the new baby and toddler, I didn't have much time or energy to clean the pool. My husband is absolutely no help. Well, we let the pool go to crap. No cover, nothing. All we did was turn the pump off because of the leak.
So here it is springtime and I am desparately trying to revive the pool. I scrubbed, vacuumed, shocked, and raked my butt off. I could not get the pool clean. Then I decide it's best to drain the pool and start over so I set the pump to waste and emptied the pool. Then I read somewhere that that is the wrong way to drain a pool.
So now, I have cleaned the pool and I am trying to start the filter and when I do the initial start-up no water is coming out of the backwash line which is always open. Any ideas what could be causing this. Oh, I should also mention that last time the filter was running sand was returning to the pool and I know we need to change the laterals but I don't know how. I am thinking of replacing the entire filter with a DE filter. If I do so, would that solve both problems? any help is greatly appreciated.
One more question, is it okay to call a regular plumber to see about this because the only pool equipment people I can find around here aren't very helpful and the last guy charged me $95 per hour and didn't even fic the problem.

What type of filter is it and did they just replace the gasket or the whole dialhead. The gasket may have been installed correctly. Also if they tok the dial head apart they may not have aligned it properly and you need to move the handle over a bit to seat it properly.
They replaced the dialhead. He didn't say anything about the gasket. Previously, I removed the dial-head myself and looked at it but I didn't know what to look for. So, I called this guy to come back out and check his work. Of course, he hasn't called back. So, if I try to look at it myself, how can I be sure that the gasket is installed correctly?

We are owners of a new pool and not having much luck so far. I had an issue where I couldn't stop the pool from backwashing. After some advice from someone here, I determined that it was the filter dial and had that replaced by a pool professional in our area. Now, it seems like the pool is draining everytime the filter is ruinning, there is sand in the bottom of our pool, and the Kreepy Krauly is not working (it is not moving). Are these issues related? I am not having any luck finding a reliable peson to help us here in Northern Louisiana. Who should I call to help with this? I am desperate. Please help.

We are owners of a new home with an inground pool. I've been stumbling my way through caring for this pool and continue to come into new obsticles. Everything was going along fine when our automatic vaccuum quit working, so I searched the net and discovered that my filter may have needed backwashing. So, I did what I thought was right. I turned off the pump, set it to backwash for a couple minutes since this hadn't been done in at least a month, turned off the pump, set it to rince for thirty seconds, turned off the pump and set it to filter. Well, now everytime the filter is on, I have water running down my driveway just like I did when it was on backwash. Am I doing domething wrong? Any ideas? I'm about this close to having the thing filled in at this point.

Well, I won't be calling that company anymore because intead of telling me what the problem was they just went on with their lives and regardless of whether or not they did what I asked them to do, I think it's very unprofessional to decide you are not at fault yet "forget" to tell the customer. However, someone has come back and told me that it is dead algae. He told me to vaccuum to waste which I have been doing but I have to do this almost everyday. Could this be right?
