chem geek
does this matter - I shocked with MPS last night and then superchlorinated. Do these things need to be done at separate times? You normally do not need to do both. If you did, then some of the chlorine can get oxidized by the non-chlorine shock to produce chlorite and then chlorate, but this is a slow reaction so does not normally happen unless you have very high concentrations of both MPS and chlorine. If you noticed a larger than normal drop in chlorine level after adding MPS, then that is what happened. Don't worry about it. In the future, just do one or the other, not at the same time.
