capetub Posted January 19 Report Posted January 19 I have a 2019 Sundance Marin 880 series hot tub. The water was overheating and causing the heater to go into shut down mode. I figured the place to start would be to replace the water temperature sensor and did that with Sundance® Spas & Jacuzzi Temperature Sensor w/ 3-Pin Connector (6600-751). That seemed to solve the problem. The tub was no longer overheating. However the water seems to be a bit not up to temperature. Temperature readout on the tub is 104 degrees and if I put a cooking thermometer in the water, that thermometer reads 92 degrees. This is calibrating the cooking thermometer with ice water before and after checking the water in the tub. So the water in the tub is about 10 degrees off (cooler than what the tub readout is saying). My question: How accurate are the water temp sensors? Does the sensor I just replaced seem like it's got a problem? Thanks for any thoughts, suggestions. Quote
Spa Board Doctor Posted January 19 Report Posted January 19 The hot tub temperature sensor should be accurate within a couple of degrees to a known good digital thermometer. Did you make a splice connection to the old temp sensor harness wires or eject the pins from the old harness (no splice)? A spliced connection can add resistance to the circuit which could affect the accuracy of the displayed temperature. You could drape the old temperature sensor over the lip of the tub into the water and reconnect it to the harness temporarily to see if it is accurate to your digital. Quote
capetub Posted January 19 Author Report Posted January 19 Thanks for the reply/help. I did not make any splices to the new sensor wiring when it was swapped out with the old one. I used the connector that was already attached to the new wiring and plugged that into a separate little connector (already there fitted with the old wiring connector, kind of an adapter) and plugged that into the circuit board. The only thing I am now questioning is if there is a possibility that it could have been installed upside down. I remember the connectors being keyed so the chance of it being installed upside down is probably not possible. Any further thoughts. Maybe the new sensor is just not accurate ?? Thanks again for the help. Quote
Spa Board Doctor Posted January 21 Report Posted January 21 Any chance the back of the sensor (equipment side) is uninsulated and picking up the ambient temperature of the cabinet instead of the vessel temperature? If so, you can wrap the back of the sensor with a short piece of pipe insulation and a zip tie. Quote
capetub Posted January 21 Author Report Posted January 21 I don't think so... but thanks for the suggestion. I'm going to assume the sensor is bad and get a new one to install. I don't really like the way the wiring has to get snaked into that piping on the interior of the tub. I'm going to cut a hole in the outside wood covering (the tub's enclosure housing) so I can get my hand in there next to where the sensor screws into that pipe (which is kind of loose. I'm assuming that pipe channel is supposed to be anchored by the foam it's imbedded in... and it's not). This way I can put a nut on the threads of the sensor where it comes through the fiberglass wall and tighten it from the inside of the tub, doing away with having to screw (turn, tighten) the actual sensor and getting the wiring to have to twist. Hopefully this all makes sense 🙂 Quote
