My spa manufacturer recommends that weekly I should shock and add Spa Clear to my water. I've seen that many owners shock their spas every 2 weeks. If my water is clear, do I even need to add Spa Clear?

I'm using bromine in my water.

Thanks for any advice.

Spa Clear is a clarifier made by Spa Boss. IMHO, there is no reason to add a clarifier if you are properly maintaining your water.

If you are doing 3 step bromine (sodium bromide to create a bromide bank, oxidizer for activating the bank and for shocking--can be a chlorine source like bleach or dichlo.,r or MPS) and tablets in a floater)  then shocking frequency depends on spa use. Shocking a bromine spa helps rid the spa of organics from bathers. If your bather load is low then shocking every two weeks or even monthly is OK as long as your floater is maintaining your bromine at 4 to 6 ppm.

If you are doing 2 step bromine (sodium bromine and an oxidizer, ususally dichlor or MPS) then you must add oxidizer after every use. If you are doing a one step product (mostly dichlor with some sodium bromide) then you add some after each use. Both 2 step bromine and 1 step bromine still need to be shocked with either a source of chlorine or MPS weely or less, depending on use.

Here is a write up on how to do 3 step bromine that has a lot of good information:

Thanks for the reply, waterbear. I've been reading through the 3 step bromine piece you posted and it's going to be my starting point from here on. Just got my Taylor bromine kit and we'll see how I do!
