tjsparky Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 I have a spa that is about 95 feet away from the panel. I have a 50AMP breaker in the pannel with a 50 amp GFI quick disconnect. I have 4 guage THHN running from the pannel to the GFI quick disconnect. My question is should I now switch to 6 guage from the GFI quick disconnect to the spa or should I continue on with the 4 guage? I found this piece of information in the spa manual.... "When NEC requires the use of wires larger than #6 (10mm²), install a junction box near the spa and use #6 (10mm²) wire between the junction box and the spa." In this case would a junction box be the same thing as a GFI quick disconnect? Thanks for your time. Quote
Pathfinder Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 depending on the length between your disconnect box and the spa you can switch to 6 gauge Quote
tjsparky Posted May 1, 2007 Author Report Posted May 1, 2007 Even though my disconect is about 8 feet from the spa. It looks like the run would be about 25-30ft. I am thinking about sticking to 4 guage in this case. Quote
Pathfinder Posted May 1, 2007 Report Posted May 1, 2007 you must check to see if the connections on your spa pack actually accepts 4 gauge wire I know our gecko Xm3 packs will accept 4 but its going to be tight on a newer Balboa board Quote

Over a 30 foot run at 240V/50A you would only have a 0.9 volt drop. #6 would still only give you a 1.4 volt drop. #6 THHN is rated at 75A Quote
