I finally convinced my wife to invest in our first SPA

Can't wait to get it ordered and installed.

My brother in law owns a Caldera Niagara SPA and is happy with it.

We wet tested his SPA a few times and are considering to buy the same SPA.

However:

We went to some dealers and were told that the construction of a Caldera SPA allows mice & vermin to get into the spa technical compartment & isolation where they happily create their home. Is this indeed a construction problem? This would not be possible with some other SPA's that use a plastic bottom and are hermitically sealed.

Is this true?

Any experience (good/bad) on this subject?

Regards,

You're probably just seeing some salesmanship in what you're being told. Mice do love spas though so whichever spa you are looking to buy, I'd have them open the equipment compartment door(s) so you can inspect it. ALL spas will have areas where air can be drawn into the equipment compartment. Be sure that they have metal guarding in these areas so that only air can get in and not mice (sometimes they use something almost like chicken wire BUT it must have much smaller holes). As far as the bottom of the spa goes, having it on concrete helps to eliminate this issue but even then you want protection. Some use a pan as you've indicated but others use a very hard coating on the bottom or a flat sheet of plastic. Any of those methods should work fine. In other words, do pay attention to this issue and how it's handled but don’t let anyone oversell their spa as the only mouse proof one out there.

I would question any who tells you that their spa is rodent proof, If the Caldera does have known entry points than ask him to tell you exactly where they are. There are diffinately spas that are more accessible to rodents than others.

Thanks for your confirmation that it is a point to be checked.

Do you happen to know what brands in general (disregarding the model or type) are better/worse on this point?

I can only comment directly on what I know, TODAYS Marquis and Nordics seem to be rodent resistant lets say, Now on any spa where you have your flex conduit coming in you will have to personally apply some screening or another type of prevention if you want to lessen the chance of entry. I understand that Hot Springs also does well in this area, I am not sure good or bad about others.

We put in both rodent steel screens and bug seals (fiberglass screen) on our spas and seal the floor with ABS. Anyway, you can buy a mouse repeller for about $11 and put it in the spa. The problem is that mice sometimes will eat away at the foam and make dug out nests under full foam spas that are on decks or with any gaps under them. They like the warm home a little foam cave makes.

Zim forgot to mention.....he also installs a continious running noise, from 1 of his CaVeNhEaD tracks. Scares and kills all sizes of rodents.

No mice in are Crown XL Nordic. we have had it at two homes where one had alot of chipmonks and where it is now we had one mouse in are bedroom but none in the nordic.

There are holes where they can easly get in but like ive said not one in it. we do run the tub at 104 degrees all winter, you would think they would ask for a 10 year lease :D

It,s a non issue and the good manufacturers take this into consideration. Someone using it to sell spas is crooked.

Well, I've never had a problem with mice making "little foam caves" in my tubs. I had a 1993 Hot Spring Prodigy which sat on a wood platform for over 11 years. Since I live in the country, I have tons of little critters all around. I did have a couple of incidents where mice got into the equipment compartment since Hot Springs did not use the metal screen barriers back then, but never saw any evidence what so ever of mice or other vermin being attracted to the full foam insulation. (I learned I could keep them out of the equipment compartment with a few dryer sheets). When I moved the tub last year for my new Hot Spring Envoy, the underside was absolutely perfect. No rotting, disintergration, mice or vermin holes.

Maybe the price for a foam mice condo is too high in my neck of the woods.

Or maybe the mice hate the full foam as much as certain other people on this board do?

I have a full foam tub and have had no problems with mice, or anyother infestation at all.

I did have a TP tub and had several mice get into the cabinet to nest.

Mice and other varments LOVE warm spaces, full foam or thermo pane.

You need to buy a spa that properly eliminates the ability for them to find their way into the spa and/or you need to add more protection to the spa you already have to make sure they aren't living there.

My tunes are well received by many professional musicians. It is fun!

I had a Caldera dealer out at my house today to remove my Full Foam Tiger River and send it down to my sister.

As he lifted the spa up onto the dolly, I inspected the underside of the spa. It was in perfect condition. (it sat 2 years on pavers and compact sand. There is no way animals or pests are going to borrow into that foam. No way. They'll eat into your house first. The dealer asked me what I was doing and laughed when I told him.

The Caldera has the same base but with a sheet of PVC over it.

Infestation on this spa is not an issue, espcally so if you are going to compare it to a Theramal tub that has the entire cabinet open.

Yes. Yes it is. :P

I like the full foam for the insulating value. from what i seen in the TP line it does look like you need to do your home work.

How so? I think from your experineces with TP, and FF you'd agree 100% with me.

Do you like FF or TP? A simple yes or no will do.

I answered you already with a very straight forward yes. I think a quality full foamed spa is the best choice for someone who has a tub outside in areas that get freezing temperatures.

How about you?

Why?

I like the full foamed for the same reason. From what info i gathered there are very few leaks in a quality tub. i have seen what is called a quality tub TP and it was what i have in my nordic.my nordic was less then half in prine to boot.

Trigger out of theses witch one do you like more. Jacuzzi or sundance??

I'm drawn to the Sundance for the FF and reputation in quality, but Jacuzzi has been getting a lot of attention lately for some nice looking tubs at decent prices. But once agian, I wouldn't put a TP tub out in the snow.
