Spring check valve broke

Hi everyone,

New to the forum but I have a decent understanding oh how tubs work.

My in-line spring check valve froze and broke. The local spa dealer tried selling me a WAY over priced PVC check valve that I can pick up at the hardware store for a fraction of the price.  However, the PVC check valve doesn’t have the same spring tension as the original.  The guy said the PVC check valve is what they use to replace them when they get a service call.  I just don’t trust them.

What are your thoughts?  Can I replace the original check valve with the PVC check valve at the local hardware store?
