skyburn Posted January 8, 2022 Report Share Posted January 8, 2022 I seem to consistently have problems increasing calcium hardness, wondering if anyone can provide suggestions. My water district claims, in their water quality report, that my fill water should have "approximately 35 mg/l or 2 grains per gallon". I have a Lamotte ColorQ 9 tester that tests for CH. I've tested my fill water with this tester many times, and it always reads 0. After a water change (400gal), I'll add 7.1oz of calcium chloride (SpaGuard Calcium Hardness Increaser) per the calculator which should get me close to 150ppm assuming the water quality info above is correct. After waiting a few hours, a subsequent test registers 4ppm on the ColorQ another test a bit later registered another zero ppm. I decided I am going to buy a Taylor drop-test for CH and see what that reads just to make sure the ColorQ isn't bad (or my reagents are bad or whatnot) but curious if anyone has any ideas around this subject. dashmer Posted January 10, 2022 Report Share Posted January 10, 2022 I agree with you that your test kit is likely off either because it is old or defective or you have something else in the water that is throwing it off. If you are going to buy a new test kit, I highly recommend the Taylor k2006, which includes CH as well as all of the other critical tests.
