32amp supply question

Hi,

I hope this isn't too stupid a question. I haven’t managed to get an answer from some of the hot tub stores as I need to speak to an electrician.

I’m moving into a new house and there is an external 13amp socket on the outside wall in the garden. Now I know I need a 32amp socket and a breaker nearer to the hot tub. My question is does a bespoke new electric cable need wiring up from the fuse box to the outside socket or can the existing wiring from the fuse box to the external socket be ok?

thanks

It will depend on the size of the wires coming over from the main panel to the outlet. Chances are, no you can't.

I'm guessing you are in Europe but here in the states, 15 A circuits (which are the normal general purpose circuits are 14 GA wire, 20 A circuits are 16 GA. You would actually need 8 GA wire to satisfy 32 A as 10 GA is good for only 30 A.

20 amp is #12, 30 is #10, 40 is #8. 50 amp can use #8 if it is less than 100ft, but I don't recommend it on a gfci circuit as it can lend to nuisance tripping. #6 is 50/60.

Doh! You are absolutely right. My mind was obviously somewhere else. Probably on the replacement wire I needed to put in on my Jeep coil pack.

Thanks for your replies. I’m over in England so will just need to speak to an electrician but wanted a rough idea beforehand. I don’t know how it will work if a new electric cable is needed as the fuse box is in the middle of the house and how the cable will go from outside to the fuse box…
