Saltwater spas--effectiveness & do they damage equipment or spa????

I have a friend who has had hot tubs for over 15 years that is trying to get me to switch over to saltwater.  He runs a saltwater spa and said its so easy and very effective.  Are they an effective sanitizer?  Do they damage pumps or spas?  Any thoughts or suggestions?

Thank you, Doug

Saltwater is not a sanitizer, it is the chlorine that is created by the cell from that salt that sanitizes the water. It is still a chlorine system.

There are some who have them in spas and like them. Mostly we hear complaints about equipment failures.

Ph and extremely high sanitizer levels damage pumps and heaters, not salt. At least not at the levels used in a spa or pool. But the chlorine generated is high ph which can cause issues if not properly balanced and maintained.

Not quite true, The chlorine generated is basically sodium hypochlorite (liquid chlorine or bleach) which is net pH neutral. The pH rise often seen is caused by outgassing of CO2 because of the aeration generated by the spa jets and also in the salt cell. Easy fix is to lower the TA to minimize outgassing.
