Advice on right size for new variable speed pump

Recommended Posts

Belated Merry Christmas!

Newbie here replacing an old single speed pentair pump with a new variable speed model and I want to make sure I get the "right" size.  I've read conflicting information about not buying a too powerful motor.  I certainly don't want to overspend if I don't have to.  Also it's near impossible for me to calculate the head based on what I've read on the information I need to do so.  Best I have to go off of is the existing pump model I'm replacing.  It's a 1.5 HP, 3450 RPM, 230V Pentair (7-177451-03 / E44549).  My in-ground pool is 21,000 gallons as best I can calculate with 2" pipes coming in and out of pump.  Any advice on what approach to take in getting a "right" sized variable speed pump replacement would be very much appreciated.  Thank you!

Hi Jason,

The Pentair SuperFlo VS 1.5HP Variable Speed Pool Pump (SKU 342001) is the same HP as the single-speed pump you are looking to replace. It's compatible with 115/230V with no need to upgrade existing wires. More specs are available here: https://www.epoolsupply.com/products/pentair-superflo-vs-1-5hp-variable-speed-pool-pump-342001
