CanadianSpaTech
188 isn't a trouble code. Either the topside isn't make good contact at the harness, cable is damaged, or either the topside, circuit board, or both, are damaged. The more common issue I run into with this problem is rodents chewing through the chord somewhere between the topside and the board, so you might want to thoroughly check every inch of that chord for any damage to it. Does the spa have one or 2 controllers you can turn the pumps on and off with.. IE: a main topside controller and another smaller controller at the back of the spa? If it does disconnect the smaller one and see if it now works It could be that the topside is not getting proper power from the transformer as well Can you post pics of the circuit board and the schematic diagram on the inside cover Do you have a multi meter?
RDspaguy
That system should run automated functions (heat, filter) with the topside(s) disconnected. Turn off power and unplug it (them) and reset breaker. If it comes on for automated functions it's a topside, if not it's a board or breaker.

I see what could be a burn mark on your box cover. Please post a pic of the circuit board.
