Can't get pH and Alkalinity balanced

Recommended Posts

I'm having trouble getting pH and alkalinity balanced. Right now alkalinity is ok (80) and pH is high (8.4). If I add pH down, both will go down. If I add alkalinity increaser or baking soda, both go up. According to some websites, alkalinity increaser should raise alkalinity without affecting pH, but that's not what I'm seeing. Any tips? Thanks.

I was having a issue balancing out my chemicals as well. We drained and refilled and I still was fighting it. I noticed my water hardness was low, once I brought the hardness level to normal I was able to get the other chemicals balanced and keep them there.

Have hard water here; still having trouble getting ph and alkalinity low enough. Am I correct that too-high-levels of alkalinity and ph interfere with the chlorine doing its job? Because chlorine level is fine...

Don’t worry about having your alkalinity at 80 or higher, lower your PH to 7.6 and maintain your alkalinity around 50-60 and you will be fine. High PH reduces your chlorine effectiveness. If you’re using chlorine pucks it will tend to push your PH down, if you’re using liquid chlorine of shock it tends to push your PH up, adjust PH accordingly.

AngleC. Sometimes the source of your water you use can create some issues that make it more difficult to control. Are we talking about a pool or a spa?  And your are adjusting your alkalinity first before you adjust your pH right? I would test the water that you use to fill the pool or spa. Just the alkalinity and pH. And see what you are dealing with and I will explain the reason for that later. Also what type of sanitizer are you using? What other products do you put in the water? Do you have a salt generator (salt pool)? Let me know what you find on the source water and what type of sanitizer you use whether it is chlorine, bromine, and if chlorine what type do you use and whatever other products are added to your water.
