Sulfuric Acid Fumes

Recommended Posts

My pool company just installed an intellipool system (salt chlorinator with automatic ph adjustment). For the automatic ph lowering, they put a big bottle of Sulfuric Acid 37.5% in my pool shed. They left the bottle open and put a probe/sucking stick in it. The problem is that when I enter the little pool shed, it smells like acid really bad. When I asked the pool company, they told me its ok. I have questions about the health effects of inhaling those fumes, and if they are not supposed to seal the bottle off properly. I also hope that the couple of times I inhaled the air while being in there won't affect my health long term. Attached I included a picture of how they setup the bottle. Can anyone tell me if this is dangerous, if my health will be affected and if it is normal to leave it opened like that?

This is a little troublesome for obvious reason that whenever we inhale chlorine it goes directly to our blood stream. When chlorine is added to our water it reacts with other natural compounds to form Trihalomethanes which are by-products of chlorine. These by-products produce free radicals in the body, which trigger cell damage, and are highly carcinogenic. The Environmental Defense Fund states that: “Although concentrations of these carcinogens (THMs) are low, it is precisely these low levels that cancer scientists believe are responsible for the majority of human cancers in the United States.”

According to review of available research (and there is a lot of it) by Marywood University confirms that long-term exposure to chlorinated pools can cause symptoms of asthma in swimmers. This can affect athletes who were previously healthy, especially adolescents. Additionally, eye and skin irritation in swimmers has been hypothesized to originate from chlorine exposure. Also, New York University College of Dentistry lists swimming pool chlorine as one of the factors that causes tooth enamel erosion.

In conclusion, too much exposure in pool chlorine is bad for your health in the long run. If you want to avoid this, try alternative methods such as silver-copper ion generators and salt water.

It's not just dangerous to you, but to any metal in the pool shed. They should seal that container.

The danger from inhalation of acid ranges from irritation to permanent lung damage so it should be taken seriously. Just search on "acid inhalation" and you'll find many sources for the problems it causes.

Yes, when I wrote "it's not just dangerous to you" I wrote "JUST" meaning "not only" or "in addition".
