Why Do Birds Die In Pools?

Birds drown in water all the time. It's not just swimming pools, but troughs and ponds as well. Bird baths work because they are shallow enough for them to stand up. If the water is too deep and they get their wings wet then they can't easily fly out -- some make it, some don't.

Obviously water fowl such as ducks have no problem with swimming pools. They are designed to float on water while other types of birds do not float if their feathers get too wet.

I just did a little research on how to prevent birds from coming near your pool (some people even have problems with birds pooping in their pools). One easy suggestion was setting up decoys such as a floating snake or alligator. Here's a fun one from Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Floating-Alligator-Decoy-by-Aquascape/dp/B001DD84E2.
