I'm using Taylor test kit for hot tubs and I have a hard time with the PH test. On the test block the colors go from a yellowish orange to grades of pink/purple. But all of my samples are shades of orange. At first I thought that the PH was just a bit low so I added PH increase. It just seems to change the shade of orange in my test sample. Yes the regents are less than a year old and stored properly. What gives. The only thing I have been trying to do is to match the shade of the water sample as opposed to the color itself. I've held it up to a light colored background in natural sunlight etc. Doesn't help. Any advice? Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

It just seems to change the shade of orange in my test sample. Do you also have the R-0006 base demand test? If so, you can use that to find out how much pH increase needs to be added. Count the number of drops added to your tested sample to bring the pH up to where you want it. Then, look up the table in the Taylor test booklet to find out how much pH increase needs to be added for your pool/tub size. Alternatively, you can take your measured pH and go to pool calculator .com, input your data, and use it's results to find out how much to add. waterbear Posted December 17, 2010 Report Share Posted December 17, 2010 If the phenol red indicator is turning orange your pH is about 7.0-7.2 Here are the approximate colors of the pH: yellow 6.8 and below yellow orange 7.0 orange 7.2 orange red 7.4 red (pink) 7.6 cool red (hint of purple 7.8 red purple 8.0 violet purple is interference from high chlorine or bromine levels. Test again when sanitizer levels have dropped. Try holding the test block against a northern (blue) sky while standing in opens shade. Not really sure what your problem is. Are you unable to match the colors of the sample to the test block or is the test staying the same even though you are adding pH increaser? How much pH increaser did you add and how many gallons is the spa? If you pH is low it sometimes will not move until enough pH increaser has been added to overcome any buffer systems in the water.
