johnsmvp Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 After 6 months of shopping for my first hot tub, I finally purchased a brand new Maax Spa, Model 780. I purchased this spa only after narrowing my search down to this spa and a Hot Springs Grandee. The two spas manufactures are at opposite ends of insulation technology. Hot Springs uses a low density foam and Maax uses a Thermo-Lock® V insulation system. Both companies offer a five year parts and labor warrantee on their spas. The more I compared these two manufactures and their spa models, the more obvious it became that the Maax Spa was a better value for me. Let me explain. I was quoted $9699.00 including sales tax, for a Hot Springs Grandee, steps, a cover, cover lifter and delivery. I was able to get the Maax 780, steps, a cover, cover lifter and delivery for the exact same price but the Maax 780 comes with much more standard equipment. The Maax 780 is designed on a zinc coated steel sub structure vs. a wood sub structure. It has 3-3HP pumps, 2-waterfalls, 80 jets, 1.5HP blower, After hours light package, Clean Zone System and Clean Zone II with ultra violet, Sony Stereo System with remote control, stainless steel accent package and pedestal lights. The reason that I am righting this post is because I found very little information online about Maax but there was a great deal about Hot Springs. I really appreciate all the other posts that have been made on this site. I have learned a great deal about what to look for in a quality spa. I have learned that everyone has their favorites and there is no one spa for all people. I have learned that the type of insulation used on a hot tub, fully foam vs. Thermo-Lock panels is a debate that cannot be easily settled. It reminds me of some other debates such as revolver vs. semi-auto. There is no right or wrong answer, only a matter of personal preference. I have learned the value of buying a hot tub from a reputable dealer vs. buying one from a department store or internet. I thank you all. I will keep you posted on my Maax 780. Quote

I will keep you posted on my Maax 780. maax spa used market the tubs under the Coleman name. They decided not renew the license. I really like Maax products and don't worry the insulation in them very good. With the acrylic shell and hard foam sparayed to back side that is all that is needed. The is no heat transfer I know I worked on many Maax Products in cold weather. Let flaming begin. Maax seems not to market the product as much as Hot Springs does. In my opinion you got a way better spa with Maax than from Hot Springs. A Word if you get all three pumps running on high at the same time while its heater you can spend alot on electric. Maax also has better customer support than Watkins Manufacturing. Quote
Dr. Spa Posted February 16, 2010 Report Posted February 16, 2010 TRANSLATION --- Maxx Spas used to market their spas under the name of Coleman Spas. They decided not to renew their licensing agreement. (they licensed the name from the Coleman Coorperation, and when it came time for renewal, they were outbid by another company). I really like Maax products. Don't worry the insulation in them is very good (personally, when someone says right off the bat, "don't worry...I'ma losing sleep over it already). With the acrylic shell and hard foam sprayed on back side that is all that is needed (depends what it's "needed" for). There is no heat transfer (in this universe, with our laws of physics, this simply isn't possible, no matter how well something is insulated). I know I worked on many Maax Products in cold weather (I'm not sure how this is relevant in terms of knowing what the heat loss my be.... It's like saying, I work on lots of old pick-up trucks so I know they get good gas mileage) Let the flaming begin. Maax seems to not market their product as much as Hot Springs. In my opinion you got a way better spa with Maax than from Hot Springs. A word of advise, if you get all three pumps running on high at the same time while its heating you can spend a lot on electric. Maax also has better customer support than Watkins Manufacturing (here I expect some SERIOUS flaming. Every dealer I know involved with HS tells me they have the absolute best customer service they've experienced). Quote
reeffreak Posted February 17, 2010 Report Posted February 17, 2010 John, as this is your first post, let me be the first to welcome you to the forum! Enjoy your purchase, and thanks for having the courage to add some candid feedback here. If you've read much at all, you're aware you've kicked a hornet's nest. This will probably be the 2nd maax thread closed in as many days I think I hear sirens in the distance To add a couple of opinions- I like the steel frame concept that Maax uses. I'm not a real fan of the UV technology though. UV disrupts the cellular processes of critters in your water. IMHO however, the tub should already be sterile. If you have critters in the water, you have a sanitizer problem. The UV system certainly can't hurt, but don't get lazy with an adequate sanitation strategy. Quote

This will probably be the 2nd maax thread closed in as many days I think I hear sirens in the distance I don't see a hornet's nest open (that other thread flaming had little to do with Maxx, it could have happened in any thread). A new Maxx owner tells us why he made his final decision and he has a right to his opinions and to choose what he likes. Congrats, welcome to the hot tub club. Quote
