Heat Not Regulating, Why?

Hey all,

I just installed a new pump. Evrything was working fine. Then I noticed that the temp was about 107F. Temp setting was at 97F. I set the temp down to 80F and today the temp in the tub had climbed to 110F!!! What is wrong and how do I fix it? I'm going out now to boil some shrimp in it.

Do you have any prgrammable filter cycles? Does the pump ever shut off? What brand or controls does it have?

Have you checked for voltage and amperage draw at the heater? If you have full voltage, I'd suspect a stuck relay. If you don't, check your filtration times. If neither of these solves your problem, check the heater for a ground fault.

The pump cycles on and off like it should. It does not stay on continuously. It does not have any programmable filter cycles, it does it on it's own program and heater kicks on when it falls below set temp. I'm going to check all the wires. just seems funny that it does read the set temp and the actual tub temp. It's just not turning off at the set temp, a bad heater should not cause this should it? Also, the Overheat sensor should have turned the tub off, should'nt it??

Usually, the hi limit shut off will kick in about 108 to 110. I suspect that either the temp sensor is bad or there is a bad temp button on the control pad.

Are there any issues in the control pad, like moisture in the display or buttons not working? If so, that may be the source of the trouble.

try turning the temp way down, like to 85 or something like that and see if it continues to heat. That may be an indicator of what was mentioned above; ie a stuck relay .

Do not let the temp get above 110 or you will experience melting plumbing, then you will have real problems.

Where would this relay be?? In the control panel or is it a sensor like he one that is attached to the outside of the heater tube.

If you have a PC board, it is on the board. If you do not have a PC board, it is a separate relay in the box.

I am experiencing similar problems. Did you ever find a solution? my relay/contactor releases when power is disconnected at the house.
