Recommended Posts

I purchased three SAM lights approx a year ago and found out today that two of the three have leaked water internally. I pulled the worst one out of the niche and inspected and all looked intact. Has anyone else experienced this problem? I am franticaly looking for my reciepts for poss warranty but?

I am assuming you purchased these new. Usually the only way for water to get into the light is through the gasket at the front.. Did you ever open the light before failure? They can be a little tricky to seal if you're not used to them. It's also possible that something in your water caused those gaskets to deteriorate. Or.. You could have gotten a couple of bad lights.. but I wouldn't expect you to have two bad ones in the same pool. I would give the warranty a try. I'm not sure about Sam lights, but they may be able to determine warranty by the serial number on the light. Give Pentair a call and see what they can do for you.

FYI Our local rep from pentair mentioned about a year ago that they were having problems with their pool lights leaking at where the cord comes in the back. That is not a serviceable area. I would definitely try pentair, they are usually very good about backing their stuff.

I've had a similar problem with a Sam light that was purchased about two years ago. Pentair is taking care of it...but im waiting to pull it until it warms up!

Well hears the scoop so far. I found my receipt and it was dated 8/06. I called Pentair and was basically blown OFF! The customer service rep said they never have had problems with their SAM lights. I mentioned the responses that have been written here and the rep said she had been at Pentair for a long time and that there have been no problems nor do they or would they consider any type of warranty help and recommended that I call an authorized service center for repairs. I mentioned that I figured that the lights are most likely ruined as the water inside looks very rusty and brown. Her comment was I should turn them on and see if they still light!!!!! I mentioned that I did'nt think that was a very good idea at which she stated NO WARRANTY and thats that. Nice customer service EH?

the one i had that was messed up was rusty and brown inside also...thats a load of crap from Pentair....with a light that retails damn near $600 it should last more than 18 months as sealed from the factory....are you a homeowner or in the industry? try getting your local Pentair rep on the phone by calling a pool guy around you and getting his number...or you may even be able to get it through pentair if you play your cards right on the phone with them...good luck

Call the Pentair warranty department 800-831-7133 in NC and tell them you have an issue. We are distributors and warranty specialists for Pentair and Sta-rite and have never had an issue. But I can tell you that the one SAM light we had leak with was about 1.5 years after installation and the chemicals in the pool were completely off and the gasket was the issue. Pentair did replace the light though. It should have a 2 year warranty on the product. I would get Pentair to send a warranty specialist out to your home to physically remove the lights and replace with new lights. Good luck, I am sorry to hear that you are having this issue because we have never had an issue with Pentair service, but then again we are a distributor. Also if the specialist looks at the lights and determines that it is a corrosion due to human error, they will not be warranted.

Note - I know what is written conflicts with the last sentence. But we (a certified distributor and warranty specialist) installed the original light, we bought a new one for the customer and sent the old one back and got our account refunded. It might be harder to get some help if the homeowner did the installation. But I do think you should get good customer service from the warranty station, there is no excuse for you not to.

  • 1 year later...

My pool was built in the summer of 2006 with two SAM lights. Both lights leaked and were replaced under warranty. I was present when the lights were replaced and both were half full of water. The technician told me they were leaking where the wire came into the back of each unit.

I would not accept that response and I'd call and ask for another rep or a supervisor. I learned earlier this year that the standard 1-yr warranty is extended to 3 if you purchase 3 Pentair components at the same time - although I'm not sure if this extends to lights, or only pumps, heaters, InelliChlor units, etc. It certainly should, as SAm's aren't cheap.

Following up to say that I contacted my Pentair rep who has helped me with some other issues in the past. He was awesome and had two new lights shipped to my house no questions asked.I installed and have no issues with either the two new ones nor the third lamp that was one of the originals. Thanks for all your responses and help.
