  1. Keeping the Water Clean & Safe Throughout the Year! Are you finding it frustrating or challenging to locate the right pool filter cartridge replacement for your filtration system? Are you not sure how the thing works? When to clean it, how to clean it, or when to replace it? In today’s article you’ll find all that you need to know about cartridge pool filters, from how they are made, to when and how to clean them, and when you should replace them. Filtration systems that use cartridges are one of the easiest and most effective ways to keeping your pool or spa sparkling clean. Though filter cartridges are easy to use, there is a bit of information you should know about them. Learn About Pool & Spa Filter Cartridges Before you start shopping for filter cartridges, it’s a good idea to spend a few minutes learning about and understanding more about the product you are buying. Having this information will help you decide on the right replacement filter cartridge and how it can make a huge difference in the overall efficiency of your pool or spa filtration system. What are Pool & Spa Filter Cartridge Replacements? As a pool or spa owner, you may have come across the brand names filbur pool filter cartridge, sta rite pool filter, Microban, unicel pool filters, or pleatco pool filter cartridge and you may have wondered what they have to do with your pool or spa. All of these brands are well known and produce excellent filter cartridge replacements, which are an essential part of the larger cartridge filtration systems. The filtration system in your pool is what keeps the water sparkling clean and free from debris, dirt and dust. It includes a filter tank, media and pump, along with several other connectors and hoses. All these components are connected together and attached to your pool or spa. A pool or spa filter cleans and filters water before it reaches the pool or spa, and keeps it clean and filtered afterwards. Cartridge filter replacements are the part of the system (the filtration media) that traps the small, invisible-to-the-naked-eye contaminants in the water, making sure that the water that reaches the system is sparkling clean and healthy. Pool and spa filter cartridges are made of pleated paper or fabric that is attached to end caps via strong threading. The higher the number of pleats in a cartridge, the bigger the surface area of the cartridge. This means more water will flow through the filter, reducing the filter time and increasing the efficiency of cleaning. How do Cartridge Filtration Systems Work? The filtration system continuously pumps water from your pool through the filtration unit and back into the pool. Here are the main components of the system: Strainer basket or prefilter – It collects the larger debris from the water (floating leaves, dried twigs, and lost swim accessories), before the water reaches the cartridge filter. You can find the basket (and empty it) via a small cap on the pool deck. Water is pulled through here first. Cartridge Media – The water then comes into contact with and flows through the filter cartridge. The fabric or paper that the cartridge is composed of (the media) traps the sediment, dirt, dust, bacteria and other contaminants dissolved in the water. Clean water then moves out of the filtration unit back into the pool or spa. The filtration system is what makes the water clean and safe for swimmers. How is a Cartridge Filter Made? Here’s a look at all the steps involved in the manufacturing process. Making Pleats : The first step involves selection of the media. This can either be fabric or paper. Then the pleat size, density and depth are chosen to provide optimal cleaning. A pleating machine cuts the membrane and arranges it into the desired number of pleats. Side Seam Thermal Welding : The next step involves welding the pleats together into one continuous piece using a heat-controlled procedure, eliminating the need for glue or any other additives. This ensures 100% integrity of the seam in water. Assembly : After being cut to the appropriate length, the pleated media is then assembled neatly between the inner core and the outer cage of the cartridge. Thermal Welding of the Ends : The cartridge is then thermal welded with plastic end-caps on the top and bottom. This ensures that the membrane is fully enclosed, so it will retain its shape and perform at maximum efficiency. How do I Clean a Filter Cartridge? Routine Cleaning Depending upon the frequency of usage, the weather, the environment, and oils, lotions, etc worn by swimmers, a regular, consistent cleaning schedule is key to ensuring that your filter cartridges are performing at their best. The most common schedule is at least once every 1-2 weeks during the summer, and at least once per month during the winter. When cleaning time comes, remove the cartridge filter from the filtration tank, then hose it down (including in between the pleats) to get rid of all the dirt and gunk. Deep Cleaning Again, depending upon the factors noted above, regular deep cleanings are essential. A deep clean can be done once a month during the summer and every other month in the winter. For a deep clean, remove the cartridge and give it a long soak in a cleansing solution designed for filter cartridges. It could be for a few hours, but for best results it should be overnight. This will remove any build up that isn’t easily removed with routine cleaning. It’s a good idea to have a spare cartridge filter on hand for the deep cleaning process. Filter cartridges perform best when completely dry after cleaning so a spare cartridge will reduce the downtime of your pool during the cleaning process and guarantee a high-performing cartridge at all times. However, like everything, filter cartridges will eventually wear down and no longer perform well, even with regular cleaning, and they will need to be replaced. Keep an eye out for reduced performance or wear and tear on the filter cartridge. If either of these is occurring, it’s time to replace. In Conclusion Now that you have a better understanding of what a filter cartridge does, how it’s made, and how to clean it, you have the knowledge to find and purchase the best one for your needs.
