  1. I have a 2006 Optima 880 spa and while the larger jets all work, the 5 1/8" silver rings that turn the jets have almost all come off. I believe that the problem is only the thin plastic that sits inside the ring to secure it to the jet. Is it possible to buy only those plastic inserts, or possibly just the ring with the plastic? The jets look like they cost about $40 each and there is really no need to replace the entire jet and I believe there are 9 of them. Thanks in advance Steve in Charlotte NC
  2. I am planning a new deck with spa, and had originally envisioned a semi-recessed tub, with movable storage bench seating around the tub to use as ingress/egress. However, having already decided on getting a Covana cover for the spa, I have since seen some incredible looking installations of fully recessed spas, some with the Covana, and have decided to go that route. I have read the threads here about the cons of having a spa fully recessed, but any way you look at it you have to climb out of the tub. I understand the having to kneel part to deal with chemicals and filters or whatever, and I do sympathize with whoever is going to be my spa guy, but the look is so sleek and I've just gotta have it. The tub will sit on its own subdeck, and access should be good for any repair guy. Problem solved as far as the cover, because I am going with the Covana. Tub will be the Optima. I'd like to hear from people who do have a fully recessed tub, how they like it, any regrets, etc., and will post some pix of both fully recessed and semi-recessed with some comments about advantages/disadvantages - next post, so this one isn't so long.
  3. I have a 2007-ish Sundance Optima inground spa with CPU board 6600-018.... was wondering if there was an upgrade path to being able to have it controlled/connected to wifi? the newer CPU boards seem to have this feature/add on option. I'm told mine is incompatible with the Sundance app/wifi.... i cant see having to replace the entire spa....maybe just the cpu board? The factory has not been very responsive on this point.
  4. Hello, I have a 1999 Sundance optima Spa. i recently bought a SpaCuzn Core insert from the manufacturer. Long story short, it was the incorrect size, and got sucked in the intake. The pump shut down. I shut the breaker off immediately. We drained the tub and retrieved the filter inset and put the tub back together. At the time of the incident, the pump was only 7 months old. Afterwards, the pump felt like it had diminished flow, but was working on both a low and a high speed. About a month later, the pump stopped working all together. We drained the tub once again, and after taking pump apart, we discovered that in the process of the insert getting sucked into the intake, it broke part of the plastic filter housing and that small piece of plastic also got sucked into the impeller and had been rolling around in there this whole time. We just replaced the pump with a brand new one. We were excited to get back up and running, but are having having the same problem - we push the button on the panel and it shows both 1 and 2 speed, we hear a click and the pump does not turn on. So, draining the tub again and are in search whatever part we need. Any ideas?? Thank you!
  5. My 13 year old Coast Spa blew it's pumps last winter and we are looking to replace it with something more efficient. I'm 6' tall and my hubby is 6'9", so size does matter and we we're looking to get a 6/7 person spa (the Coast Spa was 92" x 92" x 39"). We'd like open seating with different jet options in each seat (including foot jets), but a lounge, lights and stereo are not important to us. So far, we've looked at the D1 Meridian which we liked because of its opening seating and large footwell, but with no option to wet test the Meridian, we tested the Latitude and weren't impressed at all. That takes D1 off the list. Still in the running is the Hot Springs Pulse (scheduled to wet test later this week, quoted cost $8,600), the Cladera Niagara (also hoping to wet test this week, quoted cost $9,900), and maybe the Sundance Optima (I just found this one mentioned in a few other posts and decided to look into it, but I have no idea of cost). We've tried and liked the Hot Spring Grandee, but it is a bit larger than we wanted, it lacked foot jets, I found myself floating all over the place, and with its $10,500 price tag, it is more than we were looking to spend. Given these parameters, any other ideas on quality spas we should check out? Another question, I know that Watkins owns both Hot Springs and Caldera, but is one superior to the other? The Hot Springs rep said that the mid-tier Pulse is superior to the top-tier Caldera Niagara. This sounds fishy to me. Anyone have thoughts on this? These two tubs are very similar in look (and even the rep said they were similar), though I found the Pulse's seating to be a bit more open which I lean towards. Also, the dealers don't seem willing to negotiate price. How do their prices seem to you educated masses? Any ideas on how to negotiate? As far as dealers, I think the Caldera and Hot Springs are similar (though the Caldera dealer says it doesn't charge a trip fee while the spa is under warranty while the Hot Springs dealer charges $50 after the first year). The Sundance is only available at a big box outdoor retailer (Great Escape), so I'm not sure how good service would be after the sale (which is a valid point of concern). As I said, we haven't made a trip to check out the Sundance tubs yet, but will if given some recommendations. Looking forward to your responses. PS: We did check out the Marquis too, but didn't see one in the showroom that we liked dry, the dealer seemed suspect and the prices thrown around were $10K plus. PPS: We live in the NW burbs of Chicago.
  6. From our wet tests, we love the optima but can only find one dealer. He is long established and decent yelp review, but from looking in this forum his price seems high. We are in New England Area. Dealer says it was filled and put outside as demo last month because they got a new Covana and needed to put a tub out to show it. This is the last 2012 optima they have in stock and he says it is a top seller for this level tub he quoted 13,000 at first. We thoroughly looked it over and there isn't a mark on that we could find. He also has HotSprings but we really liked the Optima hands down. (Also saw a caldera at another dealer but can't wet test) 2012 Sundance optima ... $11,000. (No stereo). He will not budge lower Cover, Lifter Cd ozone 220v added Delivery Starter chlorine kit Spa mineral purifier $100 toward chemicals in lieu of steps
  7. Currently own (for the past 2 months) a 2012 Sundance 880 Optima with 24hr circulation pump, Clearray UV light, 2 part filtration system (inside / outside microclean filtration, with floating skimmer). Sanitation system is the 4 month Sunpurity silver ion cartridge / MPS / shock / UV light. TRUE OR FALSE (provide comments too! ): 1) Dealer recommends NOT running the jet pumps after adding shock / MPS / chemical as the circ pump is fine. However, Sundance manual says to run jet pumps for 15 - 20 minutes afterwards. 2) Dealer recommends keeping the spa cover open for 40 minutes after adding chlorine shock to protect the cover. 3) Dealer reommends keeping the spa cover open for 40 minutes after adding MPS Chlorine-Free Oxidizer to protect the cover. 4) Nature2 cartridges can replace the Sunpurity cartridges. 5) Hot tubs / spas are awesome!!! 6) My current sanitation system is correct for silver ion cartridges (per deal recommendations): Add MPS after each use, add shock about once a week. Use test strips before each use, add chemical if required after each use. Thanks!
  8. After many hours of research on this site and "the other" spa site, wet testing HS Grandee, Sundance Optima, Caldera Salena and D1 Chairman, talking to 8 different dealers, we purchased a D1 Nautilus today (our first hot tub) as it fit us both best with its' his and her corner seats. I'm 6'3", she's 5'7" and found the same seats in the Chairman to fit us best of the 4 tubs we wet tested. All dealers are different and must say we were most satisfied with these particular HS and D1 dealers with their long years selling their brands and professional selling skills. The tub is available now but the deck and tub pad must be built. I hope to be soaking before Halloween, just in time for the long, cold and white winters here in NH. Thanks to all for their contributions to this site that ultimately helped us with our decision. I'm sure i will be back to this site many more times researching water care advice.
  9. Hi, We live on Long Island and have visited a couple of different dealers in our area. The manufacturers we have considered include Jacuzzi, Hot Springs, Caldera and Sundance. Today, we visited the Sundance dealership in our area and were very impressed with the dealer and their reputation. In addition, we felt comfortable that the Sundance product was of good quality. I've searched and can't seem to locate anyone from the Northeast that has purchased a Sundance spa that would be comfortable in comparing recent purchase prices. We have been quoted $10,000 for a 2012 Optima (no radio/no tax), $9700 for a 2011 Optima (radio/no tax) that has been sitting in in the showroom and $7995 for a 2012 Chelsee (no radio/no tax). My gut tells me that all of these selections are priced at $1000 more than they should be, but I could be off the mark. I'd be grateful for any feedback. Thanks, Lou
  10. Hi All, (sorry for the long post ) My wife and I are about to get our first hot tub. We are located in Edmonton, Canada. I am quite diligent in doing my research and have been reading up a lot in this forum; you guys have been a TON of help! First off, we have wet tested an Arctic Spa Norwegian (stroke that one off the list VERY quickly, real bad experience, tub was over chlorinated and stung our eyes, too many motors, retarded volcano foot jet), a Beachcomber 580 (stroke that one off after testing the Jacuzzi and Sundance, didn't feel as good..... great sales guy, but too pricey for not as good of a tub IMO), a Jacuzzi J-365 , and a Sundance Optima (these two we will be discussing). **WET TEST IS EVERYTHING!!** Note that there is a Hot Springs seller in Edmonton, but they aren't a dedicated hot tub place... their core business is Plumbing and Lighting and they change hot tub brands like I change my socks; so we didn't even look. Polar Spas was a joke (ozone and don't need any chemicals at all... WTF? ?), and we didn't get around to KoKo Beach (Coast spas). Catalina had a great sales guy, but felt the tubs weren't as good quality as the Jacuzzi and Sundance (but they were quite a bit cheaper). I will assume if you are reading this, you know the difference between a Jacuzzi J-365 and a Sundance Optima, so I will condense what I have determined are the key differences, and key similarities that I find important. Note that what is important to me is i) good for -40C Canadian winters (-45 in Newfoundland ), ii) construction & quality, iii) insulation, iv) efficiency, v) bang for your buck (don't need no fancy stereo and lights and TVs and waterfalls), vi) hydrotherapy / relaxation / hot water / strong jets SUNDANCE OPTIMA (dealers "Floor Model Special", grey colour) has 15 more jets (different type of jets when compared to the jacuzzi... i think?) has stereo (don't even want it, it'll probably just break anyway) better filtration with the MicroClean Ultra Filter (is it better?? is it really necessary?) better waterfall (but who cares, would be ok if it didn't have one) bigger foot dome /w more jets ISO 9001 certified company (but doesn't Jacuzzi own Sundance, and aren't Jacuzzi tubs made in Sundance manufacturing facility?) Status Indicator Light (i kinda like this... don't want to have to go out and open the Jacuzzi tub to see if there is a problem at -40C. Slipstream Floating Skimmer (is this better then what the Jacuzzi J-365 has???) SilentAir Injection System (SunScents Aromatherapy Delivery system) i-touch controls (better then Jacuzzi?) 30% deposit ($3900), and only until noon Aug 7th to decide $3500 more than the Jacuzzi JACUZZI (dealers "Truckload Sale") is the shell color we prefer more (white) $500 deposit, have until Aug 17th to decide. $3500 less than Sundance BOTH same UV Clear Ray system same size and # of motors both tubs have one circ pump about the same size of tub same warranty same cover both good company's (maybe Sundance a bit better) both titanium heating element, energy efficient full foam insulation wet-tested both, liked both (maybe Sundance a bit better) Jacuzzi has the "Tri-Fusion System Shell" while Sundance has the "Rigid Bond System Shell". After reading up on both of these I have determined that these are the exact same (same manufacturing facility?) PRICE BREAKDOWN (in CDN $, Edmonton, Canada location) Jacuzzi J-365 9999, regular 13,599.00 ("truckload event") Cover Lifter 199, regular 299 Stainless Steel Jets 0, regular 519 Chlorine / Spa Foundation 0, regular 249 Two extra filters 0, regular 150 Clear Ray 0, regular 899 SUBTOTAL 10198.00 TAX (5%) 509.90 GRAND TOTAL 10707.90 $ Less then Sundance 3,504.90 Sundance Optima 12,998.00 ("floor model") Covermate III 385, regular 500 Extra MicroClean Ultra Filter set 153.00 SUBTOTAL 13,536.00 TAX (5%) 676.80 GRAND TOTAL 14,212.80 $ More then Jacuzzi 3,504.90 SO, what do you think? Any comments from any of you? How does Jacuzzi compare with Sundance for quality of tubs? Is the Sundance really worth the extra $3500? Will these survive the -40C winters? Can anyone comment on if these prices are overpriced? Any negotiating tips? The Jacuzzi dealer through in two extra filters, and gave the lifter for a discount. My initial price negotiation with the Sundance dealer failed; was quite firm not to reduce.... I may have not been very convincing thou. Spa foundation will be 6" - 8" of compacted crush rock with a pressure treated wood frame (see link, This good for the tub?) ).Would apprechiate your input. Sorry for the essay
  11. I have a problem with my spa in that neither pump will start...circulation pump and heater are working fine, as is the air pump. When I try to start either water pump all I get is a click and the spa relay switches off and resets. The same happens when I try to turn on the LED lights. Water temp is ok and no error messages are showing. The only difference on the LCD panel to normal is that the panel constantly shows "am" and "pm". This issue resolves when you go to the time or filter time function and comes back when the panel returns to normal output. I tried hardwiring pumps 1 and 2 to see if they run independently of the spa, and both ran fine! Update: After taking advice from Sundance (and others) I ordered a replacement circuit board...installed it yesterday and now the spa is in "watchdog" mode! I put the old board back in and the spa operated as above. I checked the fuses on the new board and found that Fuse 1 was blown so I swapped it out and still got watchdog mode. I put the old board back in after that and now that board too is showing "watchdog" mode. What would casue Fuse 1 to blow? I tested the temp and hi limit sensors at 28C: Temp = 27.7, High Limit = 48.1 with a digital meter. Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated, I am in New Zealand a long way from a Sundance dealer! Regards, Steve
  12. Hello, This is my first post in this board. First, let me I apologize for the long post ahead. I was hoping I coulde get some feedback on these spas: Caldera Cantabria, Sundance Optima, J470 and HS Grandee My wife and I have wet tested the Sundance Cameo (dealer didn't have the Optima) , Jacuzzi J470 and Hotspring Aria (dealer didn't have the Grandee filled) Wet Test Results: Sundance Cameo: My wife liked the lounger but found difficult to stay on the other seats ... they pushed her out so she was in akward position trying to anchor her in place. Jets were nice but one area where the jet is weak is for the lower back. Found the spa quite noisy compared to the others. The Clearray water system doesn't seem to reduce the chemical smells as much as we had hoped (perhaps water was not properly balanced???) * Since we would preffer the Optima for extra seating ... our concern is the foot jets will be a lot weaker than on the cameo ... is this true? Jacuzzi J470: We loved the lower back massage, and a couple other seats but found the foot jets a little underpowered .... and when the diverter was in neutral ... the performance in general was tamed. This unit was a 2011 with no clearray installed and the chemical odour was pretty strong. - Tub looks nice, controller is modern, Hotspring Aria: My wife found the seats unconfortable and couldnt really 'stay put' ... not footwell to anchor herself (just like it would be on the grandee. She wasn't impressed by the motto massage ... (I kinda of liked it a little but wasn't blown away by it)... other jets were just ok The unit didnt have the ACE system but the water was nice .... if we buy hotspring we would definitely get ACE since we both are sensitive to chem odours. - On the plus side... water system - Didn't like that you couldnt manually turn off jets like on sundance and jacuzzi by twisting them. As far as the Dealers go: Sundance/Jacuzzi ... same dealer whose been in business here for over 30 years Hotsprings... a long time business who is new to hotspring but has great reputation locally Here is my problem, from all the tubs I have looked or wet tested, the one that both my wife and I agree would be the perfect layout and size for us is the Caldera Cantabria. Problem is there is no Caldera Dealer in town .... but the Hotspring dealer says he could bring one in if we comitt to buy it. obviously this means no wet test. The Sundance dealer says he can bring an Optima in but we have to pay for it upfront and if we don't like it we can get the jacuzzy J470 or Cameo but no refund. What do you guys know about the Caldera Cantabria ... how does its water filtration system and energy efficiency compare to the the others? ACE VS Clearray? Any experience out there? What to do? - By the way their prices are about the same: $11000 - $11500 canadian (cover, lift, etc... no stereo) - Yes, a lounger would be nice but not at the cost of space (cameo) ... would like to seat 7 or 8 Any Advice would help.
