  1. Hello all, I'm new to Pool Spa Forum and also for the hot tub/spa subject. Please forgive me for my lack of knowledge. I tried every search engine to find this in-ground spa brand but did not have much success. Does anybody recognize this hot tub brand in the picture? How old (roughly) is this unit? ______ Here is the full story behind this, and I have a few more questions if you have time to read. The house I purchased a few months ago came with this in-ground hot tub, and it was listed as a non-functioning item. After all the hours/yard cleaning and renovations, I finally got free time to look at the hot tub. It was covered with a heavy wooden panel, and it seems the hot tub was not used for years (tenant confirmed they did not use it for six years at least.) The acrylic/fiberglass tub had few inches of old dirty water left with some residue. I cleaned up everything and washed the tub. I filled the water and turned the two pump switches (picture 6), everything seems to be working fine. Jets working, Water circulation pump is working, heater turned on and seemed working fine too. These are the equipment this system has, Jandy LXi gas heater (runs on natural gas) Jandy Pro Series CS200 filter Two separate pumps (for water circulation and jets) Air pump (very loud) Of course, the first round of water was full of dirt/dark-colored. I removed the water and cleaned the filters (Jandy CS200, canisters 1 and 2.) Filled up again with water, added liquid chlorine (Home Depot brand and added a little over half a gallon), let it run for few hours. Removed water again and cleaned the tub shell, filters. Filled up with water for the 3rd time, added liquid chlorine, circulated for few hours every day for a week (now water is clear), pumped the water out again. Now the tub is empty, as you see in the pictures. I ordered a new filter for the Jandy CS200 to replace the old filter. I will fill water again, run one more time for a week, and remove the water for the 4th time before using it. I know this is an old hot tub, but I would like to use it until the heater/motors fail (if possible) and maybe replace this with an above-ground new hot tub. I appreciate it if can help me to identify/replace few things, and some advice, What else should I do before I use it (I will do the water PH, alkaline, chlorine balance)? Hot tub jets are old and brittle (Picture 3, 4 & 5.) I need to replace them (if possible) and want to know how to remove them. I was managed to pull two fish eye parts out (picture 5) but not the whole unit that I need to replace. Two small holes in each side of the jet cover (picture 4) are just plastic hole. Not screws or anything in it. How can I remove yellow stains on the tub shell? (stains from old water and organic materials left for years). I tried bleach, white vinegar, alcohol but had no luck of removing them. Do I need to run both pumps all the time when I use the hot tub? Can someone please explain to me the pump/filtration process in picture 6? I appreciate if you have time to help me with this project.
  2. On one side of my pool I noticed below the tile that the pool wall is bubbling all along the one side of pool. The pool was resurfaced a little over a year ago. What could be the causes of this? Thanks
  3. Our concrete inground pool was emptied and left dry for a little too long. It then rose up on one side by about 2-5°. And a small crack across the middle from side to side. While running I thought I could fill the crack and relevel the sides and normalise the tilt. Or does it need to be condemned and rebuilt? Will upload pictures tomorrow.
  4. Hi all, We are a group of students that are designing a better alternative pool skimming device. We need to collect data to understand what features and constraints that we need to design our device to meet. We would greatly appreciate it if you would take our short (11 multiple choice) anonymous survey about skimming pools. Pool Skimming Survey: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd6xdf5iYzFYeKVXG9zT-4MKrt5V7uCSv5nFU77OQ6ICTKBWQ/viewform?usp=sf_link Any suggestions or products that could be useful for our research would be greatly appreciated!
  5. Hi! First year with a pool, probably some missing info: 100,000l inground, sand filter, salt water, solar heating pump runs 12hrs a day on timer, solar blanket on unless swimming i backwash/rinse every week yesterday went outside and noticed the pump was running dry - almost no water in pump skimmer basket, and the water that was there was HOT! I see from other forums I have to replace some seals, o-rings and check for melting, I can do that... but! Why would this happen in the first place? i can leave the hose turned on in the pump skimmer basket for 30 mins, and it never overflows and if I turn pump back on it immediately drains the pump skimmer basket and runs empty. stumped. All help, links are GREATLY appreciated
  6. I just bought a house with an in ground pool and spa combo. This my first time owning either. There is a small (1 1/2" - 2") pipe in the wall in between the two, which allows water flow (I assume). The pool is much colder than the spa. As I am attempting to heat up the spa, cold water from the pool just keeps rising in through that tube. I'd like my spa to operate between 100-103 degrees, but I cannot seem to get it past the low 90's with the cold (70-72 degree) pool water flowing in. The NG heater keeps running (set to max temp) without the ability to reach the desired temp in the spa. Is that pipe supposed to be there, is there supposed to be a cap... I'm freaking out... PLEASE HELP!! Thanks!
  7. I had a new Lonestar Fiberglass Pool installed in August 2013. It has leaked somewhere since. The installer has pressurized lines, replaced skimmer, we've tried everything. The pool drops at least 1 inch a day, regardless of humidity. It seems to slow or stop after it gets lower than the skimmer, and lower than the lights and discharge and suction line. It has one skimmer, three lights, four jet spas (over the two seats), one suction/vacumn line and 3 discharge lines. I've done the bucket test many many times and it fails every time. Any ideas out there? Cal
  8. Hi all, I have a fairly new pool pump for my inground pool and a few times when I go to turn on the switch in the electrical box mounted on the wall to turn the pump on, the pump will not start. So i will turn the switch off and try again (this time usually with a stronger push on the switch) and the pump starts. This does not always happen. Also, when my pump is on it does NOT randomly stop and there is not a humming noise. Anyone have any idea what could be wrong? Thanks in advance!!
  9. I have an in ground pool and it has a 1" threaded hole above the waterline on the side of the pool. I believe that it is for an aerator fountain but I don't see any way to turn it on. Is it possible that it is installed without functionality for future expansion? Or am I missing how to turn it on? Thank you in advance! Ryan
  10. I'm about to paint my older pool, now that I've done a complete resurfacing on it, due to some rust spots. I was in this big maintenance cycle in 2010 - and now again in 2013 It really turned out good previously, but I'm trying to do everything I can to minimize the maintenance, and put the best fixes in for Long-Term. I even have pictures of the Before and After, in 2010 - and let me tell you, it started pretty Ugly. Here's my recent pictures/post, from just this year: Pool, bad - Start of 2013 http://imgur.com/dD1tXw8,ZxTWQnA,5VUkyvm,VIRKdtg#2 After grinding any rust out, down to the bare steel, and cleaning, I've used a thick layer of AboWeld to patch the seams and repair any rust spots. ( It's the first time, I've used such a product - allthough I hear WallNew was quite popular too ) **** Now I'm looking for painting tips or techniques, and How to Do It Right. **** I've already gotten the paint, and it's from Kelly Technical Coatings: Olympic Zeron epoxy paint. I might go about it this way: Rough up any AboWeld spots with course sandpaper, to allow the paint to grip better. Clean and brush down, with TSP solution ( 1/2 cup, to 2 gallons ) Clean and brush down, with Muriatic acid solution ( 50/50 muriatic acid/water ) Clean and brush down, with TSP solution Make sure it's dry and I have 5 relatively Dry days ahead. Mix the epoxy paint, and apply. Tips welcome from anyone experienced. This is a Big Big job, especially since it's an IG pool, 35,000 gallons, and it's 17' by 42' I don't want to make a mistake and it's got to be quality work, throughout. ps: It's steel-sided, with a concrete bottom. I'm going to be painting over the last coat of paint - there's only 5% of it (seams & edge) that needed patching. On the bottom, just dirty in spots, stained with dirt, and a few rust spots too, I think from metal shards that got loose and landed on the bottom ( during the grinding/resurfacing process ). Eventually, this whole thing will need a rebuild, and I'm looking forward to Low-Maintenance, compared to all this; I'd be glad to hear suggestions on modern builds, materials and what is used to build new pools too.
  11. Not sure if this is the right forum or not but im a first time spa/hot tub owner and i recently just bought an old 1992 hot tub/spa and i have no clue what im needing or if i need anything at all and the other is im not sure on how to hook up all the hoses and what not. Here's what I have a 1992 ANH inground spa/hot tub, a heater, a pump, and hoses to the jets...looks like its only water hoses though not sure on that really. The control panel has three push button style controls that are currently hooked up to nothing at all since im not sure what i'm doing. Can anyone provide me with a manual for this? and maybe tell me what else i would need to get and help on how to hook it up to get the hot tub going and be able to use it? oh, and i forgot to mention that the hot tub is a 2 or three person i believe with a lounge on one side. Thanks!!!
  12. Hello. My name is Erik Martin and I'm working on a new story for The Costco Connection (the consumer magazine for members of Costco stores) on the following topic: DIVING IN (WITHOUT TAKING A BATH): How to save money on maintaining and closing your pool this season: tips on the best supplies to switch to, routine care and upkeep practices that can prevent costly repairs, and why pool owners should learn to close a pool themselves, and how to do it, to save hundreds of dollars a year. For this story, I’m looking to interview homeowners who own and maintain their own pools. I can either conduct a phone or email interview (with the latter, you can type up responses to my questions below and email them to me if you prefer). My deadline to complete all interviews is Thursday, April 4 at 4 p.m. central time. Please contact me via this forum or at martinspiration@gmail.com to arrange an interview. To check my credentials, feel free to visit www.martinspiration.blogspot.com. QUESTIONS: Why should owners learn to do it themselves? What are the benefits to opening/closing/maintaining your own pool? In addition to saving money, are there any other advantages? What will owners need to learn, purchase and do to be able to open their own pool at the start of next season? What’s the best way to learn the proper techniques for opening/closing: hire a pro one time who can train you? Read a book? Surf the Internet/YouTube? What will owners need to learn, purchase and do to be able to close their own pool (e.g., air compressor, antifreeze, winter cover, etc.)? How much will these items cost? How much money can homeowners save a year by handling pool maintenance duties themselves (opening/closing/cleaning/maintaining) instead of hiring a professional service? Give an estimate for an average in-ground and an average above-ground pool. What are at least some of these duties that any homeowner can and should learn to do themselves? Why? Do you have any tips on the best way to save money on regular supplies (chlorinator, shock, algaecide, etc.) without sacrificing quality? Is it best to buy in large bulk quantities? Are tablets more economical than granulated chlorine? Does brand not really matter when it comes to supplies? What does matter? What are the preferred ingredients and minimum available chlorine you recommend in these supplies, so that owners know what to look for? Are there any circumstances/situations where owners should be prepared to enlist a professional for help? What is the key to having a clean, well-maintained and properly functioning pool all season long if you’re doing to do it yourself? Any other tips here? What are some good preventive maintenance recommendations you can offer pool owners so they can avoid costly repairs and ensure a long lifespan for their equipment? If you’re a pool owner, how long have you owned your pool? What kind is it (inground/above ground; what kind of liner, filter, pump/motor; dimensions/volume; etc.)? Do you hire a service (for what? How much does it cost?) or do you do it yourself (for how long? Why do you do it yourself?)? Why should pool owners consider doing their own maintenance/upkeep in your opinion? Are you a Costco member (if so, for how long?) What is your full name? What city/state do you live in? If you’re a pool maintenance professional, what are the pros/cons of pool owners performing their own maintenance? Do you recommend it in any way? Why/why not? What should owners except if they attempt to do it themselves? What are some other ways they can save money on their pool during the season—any tips? Are you a Costco member (if so, how long)? What is your full name? What city/state is your business in, and what is the full name of your business? Any other thoughts, comments, or tips you wanted to offer on this topic? Sincerely, Erik J. Martin martinspiration@gmail.com
  13. Hey Guys, I have an old 02/03 Jadan spa (inground) that I have recently dropped into a raised deck. It looks awesome and works great, but the pump is running hard. And my power bill is going to be huge. What I didn't consider when putting this in the deck was that approx 750mm of the spa shell will be out of the ground and therefore completely uninsulated. So my question is, what type of insulation should I use to wrap the shell? It will get water on it. So I'll need something waterproof. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Cheers
