  1. Yes, that's one of the benefits. What kind of flow do you get on low speed? Do you get good action in the skimmer? What is the filter pressure on high and low speed? Skimmer action looks good. The pressure on high speed is around 10 and the pressure on low barely registers. Is that normal? I haven't seen much residue from the returns anymore. I am happy so far thanks to you.
  2. I had it on high speed for 24 hours and at the 12 hour mark it was looking good. This was with a green dirty filthy pool. I just swept the small amout of dirt that made it through the returns down to the drain and put in on low speed. I'll see how it looks tomorrow. Hopefully it won't be a problem once I get it cleaned up. There was alot of dirt to start with. It's amazing that I can't even hear it on low speed. thanks again
  3. Pump is in and working great. The sand that I removed looks like it wasn't what was recommended. The prior owner used something that looked like beach sand. I had yellow algae around the sides and in the pool. Swept and chlorinated and ran the pump for 24 hours and the water is clear with small insignificant amounts of dirt returning. It is super quiet also especially on low speed. Thanks very much quantum for guiding me through all of this. It was very much appreciated. Bill
  4. Emptied the sand and unscrewed the laterals. They are not broken, but not sure how clean they should be. The handle assembly that goes inside the filter just sits inside the tank and joins the pvc tube that has the laterals. Is it supposed to be like that? Is it supposed to be loose without a permanent connection?
  5. Pump is going back tomorrow. When the time came I had quite the time convincing the vendor that it was incorrect. They even called Hayward and got the wrong info, but they were probably asking the wrong questions. It seems there are others in their inventory built like this as the vendor said they opened a box and found the same thing. They have since ordered one directly from Hayward and will pick up what I have tomorrow. I am happy with the service from both Hayward and the vendor...Things happen, but if resolved correctly it can only help your reputation. Interesting Huh? I emptied the filter today, and took off the top. Looked filthy inside, I have most of the sand out. I took the handle assembly off and took it apart. I need a new gasket but there doesn't seem to be much else regarding the handle that needs changing. Will add a new gauge. I haven't gotten all the sand out yet but am curious how everything looks. Thanks for holding my hand guys. Can't tell you how much I appreciate this.
  6. Thanks to both of you. I have contacted the vendor and it will be going back. I have a while before the water gets too green.... Either a mislabeled motor and it truly is 1 HP (although it is significantly larger than my single speed 1HP) or it is 1.5 as I suspect and was mistakenly put on this 1 HP rated pump. Even the box label has the correct sp pump number and a big 1HP next to it. Another possibility is that it is a mislabeled pump and does have the appropriate 1.5 hp motor for the pump and as I have learned from you guys if that is the case I also have a 1.5 hp rated impeller and would loose efficiency. Figures to happen to a DIYfer. Have you guys seen this mistake before? Is it a rare occurrence? Thanks again fellows, I am learning a lot, I'll let you know how it turns out.
  7. I know....It was supposed to be The SF is 1.30 type cxpm Another stupid question....If this is 1.5 HP would the low speed be just as economical as the 1 HP?
  8. Hello again folks, Just received the pool pump and I am stumped. The model number on the pump itself is SP2607X102S which is what I wanted but the motor label is confusing. This is supposed to be 1HP but the labeling is as such: Part number 7 193823 01 Serial BZ06-14 TypeP56J SP1615-z-2-bsc HP-1.5- .25 ???????????? Amps 230 volts9.1/3.4 Do I have a 1.5 HP motor?. Is the incorrect motor on this pump?
  9. quantumchromodynamics, You are a terrific help. I have the dual speed 1 hp hayward on order. I plan to take the filter apart like you described and see what is going on. Give it a try for a while, change the sand etc. I can change to one of the other types you suggested later on if I want. Thanks again for guiding me through this.
  10. Hello quantumchromodynamics, Thanks for the suggestions thus far. You mention 2 different hayward pumps above. Given the new info above which one would you suggest? If I were to want a cartridge type filter how would that change the pump size rec. Was looking at the pentair products and there seems to be quite the premium regarding price. If I hadn't had a super pump for 15 years without problems I would have considered the Pentair, but unless I am missing something I will probably stick to the hayward for now. Still undecided on changing the filter system.
  11. Hello folks, Back again with some numbers. Pool size is rectangular 32x15...20,000 gallons The pump and filter are outside the screen at the same level as the pool, no more than 20 feet from the shallow end of the pool (not sure how to calculate feet of head) Pipe size is 2 inches everywhere Sand filter is a 244T with 62GPM flow rate backwash Replacing a standard one speed 1 HP hayward super pump I run no other equipment with the pump Pool is screened thus I have no problems with large debris but frequent problems with small dirt being returned. Bather load is probably on the very light side Not planning on moving anytime soon and am most interested in efficiency. I would pay more now for equipment that would pay off down the road. I am also interested in possibly changing the filter to a different method if that would solve my dirt problem. A consideration is that I haven't been using the sand filter properly. Too frequent back washing and no pressure gauge. Wasting too much water vacuuming to waste. I appreciate all the contributions thus far, and am very interested in what potential setup, pump and filter you guys would propose using the above information. Can I go less than 1 HP? Will I still have dirt issues if I use the current filter given the info above? What combination's HP, flow rate, filter etc would you guys use? Thanks for the help thus far
  12. I am ashamed to say that the pressure gauge has been inoperable for several years. I became obsessive about back washing and probably did it way to much thinking that would improve the fine dirt returning to the pool from the pump. From what I am learning from you guys it may have had the opposite effect. There is obviously more science to this pool pump and filter than I thought. I look forward to getting some good spec numbers, maybe a few pictures and see what you guys can come up with. Thanks for your time
  13. Thanks folks, Out of town for a couple of days so can't get accurate measurements yet. The filter looks exactly like this pro series top mount from hayward..although 15 years old. Sand hasn't been changed in 8. http://www.haywardnet.com/inground/product...s_Top_Mount.cfm Thanks for giving me things to thing about guys
  14. Can't thank you guys enough for the responses. I am going to do it right and go out and measure everything accurately and then see what you guys think. I only have the sand filter and back washing that runs through PVC down hill to the woods. Don't usually have much in the pool due to the screen cover, but do have problems with small dirt particles that make it's way through the filter. I usually have to vacuum to waste as I don't have a cleaner. The shark looks interesting and may be more efficient that wasting water frequently through the waste but need to deal with the pump first. Thanks again
  15. Thanks for the responses. Because of your help I am now leaning towards a 2 speed super pump. Would I use the same specs for a two speed pump. Still 1 Hp? etc. Would a variable speed be even better or would I be sacrificing hayward quality or overkill? My wife is always on my case about running the pump too long (she doesn't have to clean it) and after showing her the savings with 2 speeds, that is what she wants. Grateful for your expertise guys....btw, I am in north Florida with a screened in 20000 gal pool.
