  1. Our California Cooperage spa bit the dust a few days ago... the jets and heater won't run and I'm beginning to suspect the filter isn't running, either, since the water's getting green and cloudy. We're trying to get someone out here to repair it, but in the meantime, is there something I can do to keep it from turning into a swamp? Not sure if draining it is a good idea, since I assume the repair guy will need water in it to fix what's up. Are there chemicals I can add to keep things decent until the repair in spite of the fact that the filter doesn't run? Or should I drain and clean it and add fresh water before he comes? I'd really appreciate any suggestions... I'm getting pretty discouraged about spa ownership! Thanks.
  2. I recently set up a used spa at my place and I'm having trouble getting the bromine level up. The guy at the spa store had us clean the spa out by running heavily chlorinated water through it, then we drained and cleaned it. When we refilled the spa, he had us add sodium bromine, a product to remove the metals from the water and a product to balance the ph, along with 2 bromine tabs in a floater. On day one, the bromine level seemed fine, but I haven't been able to get it above zero (according to Aquachek test strip) since then. I had my water tested at the spa store yesterday and they confirmed that the bromine level was low and told us to add more bromine tablets to the floater. Yesterday afternoon I put 3 tabs in (on top of the remains that were left from several days ago), but this morning we're still at zero bromine. I think the spa holds about 300 gal. of water... am I just not using enough bromine or could something else be wrong? I have some people coming over to soak later today, and I'm concerned about having them in there if my water isn't just right. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks.
  3. That makes sense... does that tend to be an expensive fix?
  4. Are we going to have to learn to be polite and take turns?? I've got my new (to me) spa up and running, but the jets only work on one seat at a time, which will definitely take away from our enjoyment if there's more than one person in there! It's an old California Cooperage and the jets are adjusted using a black plastic knob on the top edge of the inside of the tub. Any thoughts on what might cause a problem like that? Thanks!
  5. The power to the spa was on, but it wasn't running. I think the problem was, as ps558 suggested, that the handle is broken off (I could see where it was broken once it finally came out) so it's impossible to pull it straight up and out.
  6. Well, I had a hard time getting the filter out, now I'm having a hard time getting it back IN! The filter doesn't screw in tightly... it seems to start to screw in, but then just loosens and floats back up. I don't know if the prior owners put the wrong filter in or if there's some other problem. I decided to just screw it in as best I could and replace the basket on top of it, but because it doesn't screw all the way in, the basket won't go all the way down and there's an open area where leaves, etc. would be able to get down to the filter cartridge. Anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm debating whether I should just run it as-is and risk getting leaves in the filter or whether I need to have a spa guy out to try to determine whether it's the right filter or what the problem is. If anyone else has had problems like this and resolved them, I'd really appreciate any help in figuring this out. Thanks!
  7. Thanks... I had to bend the hell out of the thing to finally get it out, but it worked! I appreciate the help!
  8. Thanks... I'll keep yanking!! Any thoughts on how to get a grip on the thing?
  9. I recently got a used California Cooperage spa... can't see a model number on it, but I believe it's a 20, 60 or 70 from the online research I've done. My problem is that I can't figure out how to remove the filter. The round basket over the filter (at least I'm assuming the filter's under there!) spins and lifts a bit when I try to move it but it won't come out. The instructions in the manual for filter maintenance just say "remove the filter" with no instructions about how do do it. Does anyone know how to get access to the filter? Help!
