  1. Depending on its contruction and use, wouldn't the use of a solar cover reduce UV depletion of chlorine? If so, wouldn't a lower concentration of CYA suffice to reduce UV depletion of chlorine? Our pool is typically covered about 23 hours a day, We swim in the late afternoon. We use a blue 12 mil cover.
  2. Well, after not even reading the lettering on the bag, my lack of observation isn't that surprising.
  3. Just getting ready to clean out the pool and I moved what I thought was a bag of soda ash. To my surprise it was a bag of sulphate of potash (0-0-50) . Evidently the store where I asked for soda ash gave me this instead. I must have used about 10 cups of it last season without noticing the error. Can I substitute this for soda ash?
  4. As long as the system is connected properly to a GFCI breaker, the pack GFCI can be bypassed. The spa pack GFCI was removed and now the hot tub is running. Thanks.
  5. Last year I installed a subpanel with a GFCI feeding the hot tub. The hot tub already had another GFCI in the control package. Recently the subpanel GFCI has tripped out. Inspecting the control package, it looks like the GFCI in the control package is damaged. The trip button seems to be a bit distorted and seems to be stuck. The control pack is 15 years old. I've replaced a few relays and a heater element in the past. I thinking about removing the control pack GFCI to see if that will stop the subpanel GFCI from tripping. The last time there was GFCI tripping was due to a slight water drip onto the top of the control pack. After it was dried out the problem went away. This time, drying the pack didn't seem to help. So is there any danger from removing the control pack GFCI?
  6. Does a solar cover reduce or eliminate the effects of sunlight on unstabilized chlorine?
  7. I'll answer my own question. Two inch polyethylene barrel faucets are available from Grainger Industrial and other sources. Price is between $15 and $25.
  8. I just purchased a 15 gallon carboy of 12.5% chlorine. The question is how to dispense from the carboy. It has two large plugs in the top which unscrew. Plastic faucet? Hand pump? Thanks.
  9. Our pool has a very light swimmer load of 3 family members for 1 hour per day. Would it be unsafe to maintain chlorine levels in our pool at lower concentrations than the national standards require, considering that these standards are applicable to public pools with heavier swimmers loads, and more diverse swimmer profiles?
  10. Checking with a local agricultural concentrate dealer's price list: 50# of soda ash is $17. 50# of Ten-Lo Borax is $46. How could borax dosing be cheaper? In any case, thanks for your educating efforts here.
  11. 3M 08101 Structural Adhesive worked for me for PVC pressure piping. It's urethane, not epoxy. In shear adhesion test with rigid PVC, the PVC breaks before the adhesive bond (2000 PSI). For even more strength, fiberglass cloth can be embedded in the patch. I patched our sand filter base which was broken into 3 pieces and used fiberglass mat for reinforcing. Wear disposable gloves, and plan your application, because it sets rapidly. http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/3M/en_U...CglXQ8JG35VSMbl http://www.handsontools.com/3M-08101-Struc...90-reviews.html
  12. This site seems to have pretty good leak finding advice: http://www.poolrepair.com/archive/leaks.html
  13. We would like to hear music in the pool without blasting our neighbors. These floating speakers might be good, but I can't find any reviews of them: http://www.amazon.com/Grace-Digital-AQSR40...7892&sr=8-1 Any experience with floating speakers? Thanks!
  14. The Great Stuff Big Gap Filler (black can) adheres much better than the red can or the soy-based foam when sprayed vertically. Still have some stalactites, but it looks like it will work if done in several coats. It's less than $5 for a 16 oz can at Home Depot.
  15. Finally tracked down some leaks after jacking up the hot tub and digging out a lot of foam insulation. The leaks were at the suction return fittings and could have been fixed without digging the insulation out. Anyway, today I attempted to spray foam on the bottom of the shell. The soy-based foam from Costco dripped off in big gobs, as did Great Stuff Crack Filler. I may try some Great Stuff Big Gap foam or whatever it's called, in the black can, but I'm not optimistic. Froth-Pak looks like it would work. TAP Plastics has it for $65 for one cubic foot expanded volume, which seems like a rip-off. Similar product, Versi-Foam, is on EBAY for about half that price. Any suggestions? Thanks!
