ja3250 Posted March 10, 2013 Report Posted March 10, 2013 Just purchased a house with a inground pool. I turned on pump and had leaks in pipes. I fixed all leaks and while I was at it I replaced the 3 checkvalves between pump and pool These valves are flapper kind and clear so I can see whats going on inside of them. The are all in vertical pipes. I prime pump and it runs all day fine with no leaks. I can turn it off wait a bit and turn it back on and it works fine cause it is still primed. If I leave pump off for a few hours the water eventuall drains from the pipes back into pool causing pump to lose prime. When I turn pump off I can see that the new flappers are floating (not closing) eventually pipes lose water and flapper drops down First question should the flappers close as soon as I turn off pump stopping water from draining back into pool? If yes what causes flappers to drop down? It appears when I turn off pump there is not a rush of back flow so the flappers float alowing water to slowly drain back into pool. All 3 brand new flappers are doing this!!! Any suggestions is greatly appreciated Quote
Pool Clown Posted March 11, 2013 Report Posted March 11, 2013 If you can post a pic of the check valves, it will help us determine what is happening. Quote
Sunnyside Posted March 24, 2013 Report Posted March 24, 2013 Agreed, very hard to figure out what's going on without pictures. Personally, I've never seen a check valve fail to close if it's got the right spring in it. However, come to think of it, I can't say that I've really seen a check valve on a suction line... I've only seen a 'ball valve' installed in front of a pump when the pump was located many feet above the water level (so that the water wouldn't drain into the pool when the lid was opened. Three check valves? I'm curious to see what's going on with this setup ;-) Quote
drandolph Posted April 1, 2013 Report Posted April 1, 2013 This is your check valve, is your spa raised ??? or is your equipment a little bit above water level... the flapper should be staying shut when pump is off there for holding the water in the filter and pump for the next running cycle I'd replace the inside of your check valves Quote
