mmuller Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 hi...we are having issues with our pool holding chlorine levels high. we shocked the pool 5 days ago, had sun most of day, and chlorine levels are at 10. Chlorinator was set to 3....Same thing happened when we opened the pool about a month ago. it took two weeks with chlorinator off and us having to put knock out in. Why are our levels constantly being high, especially after we shock the pool?.... Quote
waterbear Posted June 17, 2012 Report Posted June 17, 2012 How high is your CYA? Posting a full set of test results and some more info about your pool would tell us more about what might be going on. The amount of info you gave us is akin to saying in an automobile forum " I put oil in my car and now is it making noise, what's wrong with it?" Not a lot of info to go on, not even the make of the car! Quote
mmuller Posted June 17, 2012 Author Report Posted June 17, 2012 what other info do you need? All tests were in normal range except for the chlorine level which was a 10....It is an inground pool with cartridge filter and inline chlorinator. Water has always been clear....My pool is in full sun for almost the whole day and the pump runs from 10am-5pm.... Quote
mmuller Posted June 17, 2012 Author Report Posted June 17, 2012 waterbear, no need to be condescending....was just asking a general question" why my chlorine levels would stay so high after so long a time?" Quote
waterbear Posted June 18, 2012 Report Posted June 18, 2012 Not being condescending at all. Without that type of info and we really can't do more than guess. One thing about pools, there is no such thing as a general question because what appears on the surface to be the same problem could have many causes. what other info do you need? All tests were in normal range except for the chlorine level which was a 10....It is an inground pool with cartridge filter and inline chlorinator. Water has always been clear....My pool is in full sun for almost the whole day and the pump runs from 10am-5pm.... Once again, saying that tests are in 'normal range' tells us nothing.Numbers do. Clear water tells us nothing of the water balance or chemical levels. Also, what are you testing your water with? Once again I ask what is your CYA level (NOT read with strips because they are notorious for being wrong on this test). The additional info about hwo you chlorinate and your type of filter is helpful. The fact that you use trichlor tabs (inline chlorinator) and have a cartridge filter (water does not get diluted by backwashing) makes me suspect that the CYA is very high and that would explain why the FC level stays high for a long period of time. (I assume that the chlorine reading of 10 is free chlorine and not total chlorine, correct? If it is total chlorine then we really need to know the free chlorine and combined chlorine to make sure something else is not going on.) What are you shocking with (cal hypo, sodium hypochlorite, dichlor)? Another possiblity, if your inline chlorinator is a Hayward CL200, is that it is clogged and stuck all the way open. This model is notorious for getting clogged and either getting stuck all the way open or closed no matter where the control dial is set. Once again, this is why I asked for more info about your pool because I assumed you wanted to know what was causing your problem so you could solve it. Quote
MikeH Posted June 25, 2012 Report Posted June 25, 2012 As an aside, if your chlorine level is 10 then nobody should be swimming until it is balanced. Waterbear is right on CYA levels. If you have a spa store nearby they normally have an automated testing machine that will tell you exactly what is needed to bring your water into balance. Quote
