JeremyJL Posted November 24, 2011 Report Posted November 24, 2011 Hey everyone, So last night I was using the spa and everything was running as normal for about two hours and then the heater did something I have never seen before. I noticed smoke coming out of the exhaust vent, since it was dark out and late, and I did not feel like messing with it I shut the heater down and left it alone. I woke up this morning and fired the heater up again and this is what happened. First thing it did was the exhaust vent ramped up to high and stayed on for about 30 seconds. Next the fan cycled to low, and this is when I could smell natural gas around the heater, I assume that it was exiting through the exhaust vent. After another 30 seconds or so of the vent on low, I then can hear the heater light, and make the normal whistling sound when you first fire up a heater. The exhaust vent then ramped up to high again and this is when i noticed smoke coming of the vent. The smoke only lasted for 20-30 seconds and then stopped, and i could no longer smell any natural gas, and the heater worked as normal and heated the spa. I cycled the heater on and off 3 times and the above events occurred every time. Any one have any ideas of what is going on, or how to fix it? Thanks, Jeremy i meant to put this in the in-ground pool section. Quote
Pool Clown Posted November 25, 2011 Report Posted November 25, 2011 Sure it wasn't steam? Was it cold out when you did this? Did you notice a smell when it smokes? Smell like metal or plastic burning? Quote
JeremyJL Posted November 25, 2011 Author Report Posted November 25, 2011 Sure it wasn't steam? Was it cold out when you did this? Did you notice a smell when it smokes? Smell like metal or plastic burning? Pool Clown thanks for your input, During all of this there was no smell other than that of natural gas from before the unit fired up, no smell of metal or plastic burning. The air temp was probably around mid 50's, and the pool temp is at 62 right now. When this first happened last night the temperature through the hot tube/heater had been upper 90's for about two hours. I dont think it is steam, i have never seen any visible exhaust come out of the vent until now, and it happens every time the heater turns on. This morning/afternoon when i ran it again, with the same results as last night the temp was in the 70's, so i do not the ambient temperature is playing a roll in this. Is it normal to smell some gas as the heater is in the process of firing? I have never noticed it before, but usually am never around it when its running/turning on. Anybody familiar with these heaters, is it normal for the fan to cycle high-low-high while in the process of firing? Thanks, Jeremy Quote
