Hi all. I need some pro advice. I have been having some copper and ph issues with my pool. I have drained and refilled without success in improving my water much. See thispost for details.

My liner tore while the pool was refilling and I am looking at replacing it. I am thinking that I will do some repairs to the system before I put the new liner in.

We bought the house 2 years ago. The pool light has been vinyled over. The skimmer had a crack in it which I epoxied last summer. I have been told that my filter was made for an above ground pool and should be 3 times larger. The timer is broken and I control the pool pump by turing the breaker on and off.

I was considering replacing the entire system. I have copper pipes imbedded in a slab that run approximately 20 feet to the pool pump and filter. I was thinking of replumbing the pool while I was at it. There is no bottom drain and I don't plan on adding one. I was thinking of relocating the pool equipment so that I do not have to jackhammer the entire patio. I was going to add a LED light.

Can anyone recommend a good plan of attack? Can someone recommend a good energy efficient system that will not break the bank?

I have a 13000 gallon vinyl lined inground pool.

Thanks in advance.

I personally believe that main drains are beneficial - for closing the pool, if nothing else. But you will be fine without for a 13,000G pool.

LED light is an excellent choice, esp given your gallonage (LED's typically aren't bright enough to illuminate the far (shallow) end of a long pool.

Variable speed pumps are more expensive but considerably more energy efficient - you'll recoup the increased up-front costs within a couple years of normal operation.

I strongly recommend a salt-water chlorine generator. Although you still need to maintain a regular testing regimen, pH tends to remain fairly stable (normal pH creep requires small amounts of acid roughly once/5-7 days), and you should only need to shock rarely, if ever. I keep some 6% bleach on hand but generally don't buy any chlorinating products between opening and closing.

Where are you located? A heater or heat pump can lengthen your swim season considerably.

I have a sand filter and my pool is crystal clear from opening to closing.

I do recommend that you oversize your heater, filter and SWG (if you opt for that). Relatively small price differential for longer lifespan.

My comments are generic and probably not very helpful. I use all Pentair equipment, and have been quite pleased so far. While Pentair equipment (pump, heater, filter, SWG) come w/ the same 1-year warranty that is the industry norm, Pentair will extend warranty to 3 years if you have 3+ pieces of Pentair equipment. I also have an electronic control board (Easy Touch) but you should at least opt for a mechanical timer wired into the breaker box so you can automate the pump(and hence the SWG)run times.

Thank you for the great advice. We are looking forward to getting thinks taken care of next week. We are in Northern California, in the East Bay. Our swim season is already pretty long. Right now, we are going to forego the heater as the hit to the budget with the redo of the pool is a big expense.
