zuegnu Posted August 2, 2010 Report Posted August 2, 2010 Hi everyone, newbie here. I have a Marquis Envy, 110 or 220 convertible. My question is regarding wiring 110V. I have an outdoor dedicated GFI receptacle in a waterproof box. Do I still need to have the cord with the GFI on the plug end? Seems redundant but all the new plug and play tubs have those, I assume to go into a non-gfi outlet?. My tub came from a 220 installation and has no wiring as it sits but I have 110 available in the setup described and might just give it a go to see how I like it. The cords with GFI on the plug end are expensive and I am wondering if they are necessary if the outlet is GFI as I mentioned. It is about 15 feet from the tub around a corner of the house as well. Thanks! Quote

Thanks! I do not know about code, but from a safety standpoint, no. Everything downstream from a GFCI is GFCI protected. No need to add another. EDIT: I see you joined this morning. Welcome to the forums! : ) Quote
zuegnu Posted August 2, 2010 Author Report Posted August 2, 2010 My outlet is installed to code as an outdoor GFI, so I guess since I've never seen a 110v spa without that GFI on the cord I just wondered. Obviously a suitable cord without the GFI inline or on the plug is FAR cheaper. I am no electrcian but I thought you didnt want to stack gfi on gfi etc. Thanks for the welcome, I am new to the hot tubbing thing so I am sure I'll have more questions! Quote
Dr. Spa Posted August 2, 2010 Report Posted August 2, 2010 Careful! Most GFCI outlets are rated at only 15 amps (plug-in 15 amps, pass-through 20 amps). the spa probably needs 20 amps. Quote
