PooLNeW-b Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 ok first off hello everyone. This is my first pool. Its a 15 x 36 intex metal frame. Gonna upgrade next year when the kids are older. So I ran all the test 36 hours after adding Stabilizre, PH plus and granular chlorine. The test where taken with an HTH 6 way test kit. Results: PH = 7.2 Chl = 5 Alk = 50 I have read baking soda should bring it up. CH = 80 CYA = 30 Please help me level these out as im sure they could use some adjusting. Edit: also this was the HTH drop kit not the test strips. Quote
waterbear Posted July 6, 2010 Report Posted July 6, 2010 actually not bad at all. How are you chlorinating? If you are using trichlor tabs or dichlor granules then you do want to bring up the TA with baking soda. Shoot for abour 100 ppm If you are using bleach, liquid chlorine, or cal hypo then I would leave the TA where it is C?YA of 30 is the low end of where you want it. If you are using trichlor or dichlor it will keep rising and you really don't want it over 50 ppm At that point you really should switch to bleach/liquid chlorine or cal hypo. Don't let the pH drop any lower. If it does then raise the TA with baking soda and if the pH is still low after use borax to bring it up, not soda ash or pH increaser. Quote

As for chlorine its HTH granular chlorine. Not sure which kind it is. Any idea? lol after rereading your post it looks like it may be dichlor. So I will try to get my alk up to 100 tomorrow. Then see where my ph i at that point. Also I notice my hardnss is a bit low at 80 will; that rise on its own or should I try to bring it up with chemicals. Edit: Just checked my bottle and it has calcium hypochloride in it so that must be cal-hypo im using? I may have spelt the hypo word wrong just read it quick. Quote

Is adding chlorine every 2 days to bring it back up, normal? I noticed after having 6 kids and 2 adults in the pool all day my FC dropped from 5 to .5-1. Quote

I may have spelt the hypo word wrong just read it quick. You need to test your CYA level and see where it is. If you have been using cal hypo it is probably 0 unles you have added some. CYA helps prevent the chlorine from burning off in sunlight. Well 1 more question to add. Is adding chlorine every 2 days to bring it back up, normal? Pretty much I noticed after having 6 kids and 2 adults in the pool all day my FC dropped from 5 to .5-1. Not unusual, especially if your CYA is low. Get it tested and post the results please. Quote
PaulR Posted July 7, 2010 Report Posted July 7, 2010 First post in the thread shows stabilizer added and CYA = 30 after 36 hours, which was 24 hours ago. I'd give it another day and test again in case it didn't all dissolve right away, if it's still 30 then add a little bit more (about 1/3 again of what you added originally) to target 40-ish. Then you should be fine for the season. --paulr Quote
