Just a warning to those in Southern Ontario - I chose a contractor who claimed to have knowledge of fibreglass pool installation. I checked references, did due diligence on his business dealings, he seemed OK. He was a newly authorized dealer for a very reputable company in this type of pool, but had dealt with and installed other lines of FG pools as well. Due to a number of factors of his own doing, his dealership was terminated by the FG pool company. Unfortunately my money was already out there (in the form of a deposit). I have done nothing wrong, yet he took my deposit and disappeared, after having stated in an email that the deposit would not be returned, due to his trouble.

The man did no work for me, he talked a good game and was very self-confident. I felt confident that a reputable pool company was standing behind him. Well, he's gone with my $5600.00, and my only option is to spend more money to sue him in Small Claims Court. Do not use Brad Hunter of Modern Exteriors of Simcoe, Ontario, aka Stampcrete, aka Woodstock Modern Exteriors of Canada. He has our money and feels totally justified in keeping it because he feels it was not his fault he was cut loose by the company he was representing. Buyer Beware!!!!

WOW! thats sad a builder would do this to you even with all those references it's one thing if he made a mistake on the job and came back and fixed it but DOWNRIGHT taking your money??? I do know of a contractor who took $30,000 went out, dug a hole and filed for bankruptcy and there wasnt a thing the homeowner could do, the problem with your builder was he more of less went broke and is going out and getting payments and is going to file for bankrupt once he gets what he wants.

Well I'm kind of glad we didn't even get a hole. It would have been even a bigger mess to deal with! Thank goodness the timing was such that I had not advanced him any more funds, although he had called and made arrangements to dig the hole the next week, and to collect the largest portion of the funds. Small comfort, but nonetheless ....

I agree, I believe he was collecting from me to perhaps keep something else afloat. Who knows. He has certainly soured my view of contractors as a whole, which is really unfortunate since there are a lot of good ones out there.

More of less he's got more work then he can handle and is taking funds to cover other projects like you said either he made a mistake on a job and had to cover the cost or he underbid a job so bad he had to go out and rip someone off to cover for that job....... I use to take install payment when I first started, let them send the big portion of the money to my fiberglass manufacture so they knew I wasn't ripping them off and I wasn't getting the money but the manufacture was (i use to make so many good deals), however sometimes i could not keep a deadline date cause I had too much going on and this really pissed homeowners off, I always got to them and never took there money, looking back on alot of my projects I could have easily just took the money and filed for bankrupt and end up with a bank full of money but being the Christian I am I NEVER did this and gave rather then received. Now I see all these builders taking money, filing for bankrupt, ripping homeowners off, etc etc. It's sad to the pool industry, these guys who do this get away with it too...
