pureluck32 Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 Inground 18x36 3ft-9ft (26K Gal) Using circupool salt system 2nd season. Opened up 5/30/2010, very cloudy, possible algae. had water tested, 0 fc, 0 tc, 7.5 ph, 150 ta, 0 stab, salt 3100. Added 16 oz algaecide, 1 gallon water cond & stabilizer, then 32oz clarifier (8 hours between with constant filter & 2 vac jobs) ran 2 cycles of superchlor on SWG 24 hours of 100%, no CYA or chlor readings. Added 3 bags rebound, 2 days constant filter with 70% SWG setting and new filter cartridge. Had phosphates tested, low level. Ran another superchlor 100% SWG, added 16 oz clarifier, filter 24 hours, still not "clear". I can see shallow end clear and about 1/2 way down on deep end. I need to get a reading on chlor, should I add 3 more bags rebound? Go to Chlorox liquid? Add more stabilizer? I also get different readings from different pool stores. 2 read 0 chlor and 1 read 2 chlor. My home test shows almost 0 chlor. Tired of throwing crap and money into pool. Please help. Quote
PaulR Posted June 9, 2010 Report Posted June 9, 2010 "Rebound" is such a generic term I can't find a description of this chemical in google. Can you see what the ingredients are? If not, who's the manufacturer? Fundamentally, without stabilizer (cyanuric acid, CYA) the chlorine is disappearing from the double whammy of sunlight and (probably) algae. That's why you can't maintain a chlorine level. Superchlorinate cycles on the SWG will cause it to produce more chlorine, but not really enough to take care of most problems where you need a chlorine boost. I prefer "liquid chlorine" or bleach (same stuff just different strengths) because it adds nothing but chlorine and a teeny bit of salt. In 26k gallons, 1 gallon of liquid stabilizer is worth about 15ppm according to the Pool Calculator. I'm not aware of a CYA test that can read levels below 20-30, so it really still wouldn't register. Another gallon of liquid stabilizer, or 4 lb granular stabilizer, would get you into the 30ppm ballpark. At that point you'd have enough stabilizer to protect the chlorine from the sun, so it can go to work on the real problem. --paulr Quote
pureluck32 Posted June 14, 2010 Author Report Posted June 14, 2010 I added 4 gal 12% liquid pool shock, 1.5 lbs Stabilizer, 32oz clarifier. Water is getting clearer, 90% visible on deep end. Had water tested at pool store today. ZERO free chlorine, Zero stabilizer, 7.3ph, 133 alk. I bought 2 lbs stabilizer added. I have my filter and generator (at 70%) running 24/7. I see some talk of ammonia being some problems. Do pool stores ever test for that? Does it sound like it may be my issue? How much more liquid chlorine should I add? It is $3 a gallon here for 12%. Any ideas? Quote
PaulR Posted June 14, 2010 Report Posted June 14, 2010 Pool stores generally would not test for ammonia, but a pet store that has fish tanks ought to have a cheap ammonia test. You can use the Pool Calculator to figure how much stuff to add. Where I am, $3/gallon for 12% is price-competitive with Clorox (at 6%), but that's what you want to compare to. 1 gallon of 12% is roughly comparable to 1.5 large (182-oz) jugs of Clorox, when you are doing price comparisons. --paulr Quote
