When looking for our first hot tub, the sales guy at Hot Springs suggested that we consider having a Chlorine Salt Generator installed for an additional $1000. I like the idea of once/year or so water changes and better quality water - but is it really necessary? Is he trying to rip me off? I'd appreciate anyone's input on the pros/cons of these generators. Thanks!

I'm not sure that once-a-year water changes are part of the deal--except in some imaginary world where the spa temperature is set at 60 degrees and no one actually gets in! But if you don't mind spending an extra 5-10% of the purchase price for the chlorine generator you may find that it's a bit easier to maintain consistent sanitizer levels. Before I understood the importance of pool water chemistry I just spooned in DiChlor but the right (and safer) way to sanitize means regular small applications of unstablized chlorine or bromine, especially important at time of use or right after. A Salt Water Chlorine Generator will lighten the maintenance a bit. I paid more than 1K for a Goldline model that works with my pool and IG spa. So, not a rip-off... just expensive! tongue.gif

I've had my salt generator for a year and recommend it. The chemicals are more stable and the water feels better. My first generator salt was spec'ed to my pool size,20k gals.,it always ran at 100% to maintain chlorine, barely. I dumped that one and got one for 40k gal. pool and it runs at 50% to maintain chlorine. I suggest getting a generator larger than your pool size(in gals)to have more operating room. It cost about $150 more for a larger size. best deals are e-bay off season.

I would suggest that you fix Chlorine Generator for your Hot Tub. Because,

Amongst the lots of benefits of a chlorine generator are the following:

  • Unremitting sanitation
  • No stun
  • Less chemicals in the water
  • Clear eyes
  • Soft Skin
  • No harmful chlorine smells
  • No managing or transporting chlorine
