Hi,

Our marcite was old so we had the pool resurfaced with fiberglass. Looks great. The resin smell during the resurfacing was really strong. It's been a few days now since the pool has been filled and the water itself still has a strong resin smell to it. Is this normal with a newly resurfaced fiberglass pool? I asked at our local Pinch a Penny and 3 of the workers there said they had no idea if that was normal or not, so that was no help. The guy that did the pool has been doing them for 20 years and said that the pool could be filled within hours after he put on the gel coat, which is what he did. There doesn't seem to be any problem other than the smell. I would think it would be hard for the pool NOT to smell for a little while since the resin smell was so strong all around the pool when the work was being done. Hope some of you have knowledge of this and know if that's normal or not. Thanks

A resurfacer that I know uses Fibre Tech brand fiberglass. There is usually some smell from the resin that will dissipate over time. This is usually more of an issue with indoor pools. There are several cases that I am aware of where indoor pools had to be redone due to the smell not dissipating.

The manufacturer supposedly makes a special formula/additive that reduces this problem. If the resin and the hardener were not properly mixed and in the correct ratios, then there will not be a complete chemical reaction and there will be unreacted resin and hardener that can get into the water. If the fiberglass was not given enough time to dry before adding the water, then the resin will get into the water.

This stuff is extremely difficult to work with due to the rapid reaction once the catalyst is added.

The hardener is M.E.K.P (Methyl Ethyl Ketone Peroxide). (Smells like acetone or PVC cleaner.)

The resin is polyester and styrene.

Average Dry Time at 75° F: To touch 4 hours

To overcoat 12 hours
