Hi all--I am a pool novice and the owner of a inground 40 x 22 bioguard mineral springs pool. The costs related to this is killing me and I'm curious to know if there are any substitutes for the beginnings and renewal products I currently have to purchase. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :D

Yes there is, use solar salt (sold for water softners) to bring your salt level to 3200-3400 ppm (you can also use the more expansive pool salt but it's reallyh the same thing, just smaller crystals), make sure your CYA is at 70-80 ppm, and add borates to 50 ppm either with a commercial borate product like Proteam Supreme plus or with 20 mule team borax and muriatic acid.

Beginnnings and renewal are just salt, borates, and CYA

Here are some howto's from another board that explain what to do:

You do need a good test kit. There is really only one choice, Taylor K-2006, not the k-2005. You also want some Aquachek salt test strips and if you add the borates LaMotte borate test strips. These are the only test strips that are worthwhile using, btw.
