New member, first time to post, I appreciate your input...

We are building a pool in Flower Mound, TX. Currently talking to Mirage, Joy, BMR and Mermaid pools. I'm seeking any experience good or bad with these companies. Also, I have a few pool "newbie" questions...

1. What equipment is best - Pentair, Jandy or Hayward?

2. Filter - should I go DE, sand or cartridge?

3. Salt system - is it really all that, worth the money?

4. Pool surface - I'm having trouble cost justifying PebbleTec and thinking about a Quartz/plaster surface. Looking to extend the life of plaster. Thoughts?

Thanks again!

Whites Pools & Spas are terriffic..they use stonescapes which is much like pebble tec but less expensive. They are on the web Whitespoolsandspas.com if you have not already contracted with someone, they are worth checking out

I'm a totally Hayward buider, so I recomend Hayward, as a superior product with a 3 year warantee.

D.E or sand or cartridge depends on your situation,

Salt is worth it www.haywardnet.com

Stonscapes or pebble fina would be a good upgraded surface without being to hard on the feet

Let me know if you need a custom buider or 3d design

If you're still searching for a builder I can recommend Artesian Custom Pools. They are in Frisco, TX and have been great to work with. I live in McKinney and I believe that Flower Mound is in their service area too. Small company, they don't subcontract - doing it all themselves. Send me a PM if you want additional info on them, I'd be happy to help.

Building a pool can be a big decision and if you are a first time buyer you probably will feel a little out of the loop when it comes to the construction process. That being said here are a few things to remember:

1. Small VS BIG- small companies might be alot more personal, but dont forget they will be more worried about their bottom line and are more likely to cut corners. However you dont want to be just a number, that is why I would recommend medium-2-large pool contractor.

2. Company History- do your research, go to BBB and make sure they have an 'A' rating or better and make sure they comply with the BBB'ss standards & practices. How long have they been in business? I personally would only go with a company with 8+yrs in business

3. Does the company match your Pool?-Meaning if you want to build a $100k pool make sure when you look at pics on the companies website they do those style pools. If everything is a basic $25k pool and they are a small company I would probably move on.

4. Get multiple Bids (usually 3)-This speaks for itself

5. ASK QUESTIONS!!!- Dont be afraid to ask questions. A good company will not hesitate to answer them and/or find out anything for you. Talking with several companies and getting different answers/bids can be confusing so be sure when you come to a decision to read your contract and make sure it is everything you want & you didnt leave anything out(ex: some extra that you told another company you wanted but not the one you decided to go with)

Putting all these factors together I have listed below the companies that I hear most about in the Pool building world

1. Venture Pools *Highly Recommended*

3rd biggest pool company, open for 12years, 1 centralized office, great communication & price competitive

2. Anthony Sylvan *Not Recommended*

Publicly traded company

3. Hobert Pools *Not Recommended*

several sales offices, just another number, poor communication but price competitive

4. Robertson Pools *Not Recommended*

poor construction quality, lengthy construction process, bad customer service

5. BMR Pools *Recommended*

Not as price competitive but quality product
