jkusmier Posted October 29, 2008 Report Posted October 29, 2008 I closed the pool this past weekend. I used an air compressor to blow all returns, deck jets, skimmer and main drains (at 18-20psi) one at a time, until I saw nothing but mist. Then added ~ 3/4 gallons RV antifreeze to all returns, deck jets and skimmer. Also filled the skimmer well w/ antifreeze. Capped all returns, plugged the deck jets and installed gizmo in skimmer. Question: after blowing/capping the lines, I merely unscrewed the drain plugs from the heater and filter. Was this sufficient? I'm less concerned about the filter (Pentair Sand Dollar SD80) than the heater (Pentair MasterTemp). Should I have blown the heater? If not, I was thinking 1) I could add some antifreeze via the drain plug or 2) I could jury rig something with a plastic straw and duct tape over a shop vac hose and vacuum out any water remaining in the heater. Is either necessary? I thought blowing the lines would remove all water from the heater. Appreciate any advice, and thanks! Quote

I would still blow air just thru the heater to make sure. Heater repairs can be costly. We always reomove the drain plug from them while blowing the lines. You still do it even with the pool closed Quote
jkusmier Posted October 30, 2008 Author Report Posted October 30, 2008 Thanks - I'll do exactly that this weekend, while winterizing my irrigation system. I need to move away from winter! Just keep all lines closed and blow once more, right? (Drain plug already removed from heater). Quote
