Crack In Fiberglass Pool

HELP!!!!!! After the recent fires we had, we finally had to bite the bullet and drain our fiberglass pool. We knew our light never worked when we first bought ou house 10 years ago, but had no idea it had been leaking behind it! So as we were draining the bottom of the pool we discovered a crack that continued to leak water in. It has finally dried and no water is leaking in is ther some kind of easy fix for this? I've been told that fiberglass patch won't flex enough when the pool is filled. If there is no easy fix for this does anyone know of a reputable repair sevice in or near Ramona, CA! plese help it is starting to get hot!

First of all find out who made the pool. Normaly there is a little indention right under the skimmer that will have a number and the manufacturer. Contact the manufacturer and see if they can either send a repair crew out, or help steer you in the right direction. There are a lot of companies in San Diego County that repair fiberglass tubs and showers, but you need the right gel coat to match the color up.

I heard that there is an epoxy made just for fiberglass pool, you can also do the repair under water. But choose a quality one.

The best way is to drain the pool water to below the crack. Take a dremel or other hand tool and make a valley in the crack (so it looks like a "V"). Fill in the crack with epoxy resin & make sure the area is FULLY sealed. Wait until the area dries then sand it down to level - 200 / 300 grit wet dry paper works best. To match the color of the hull, I recommend finding a gel coat enamel You should be able to find the right paint at a Home Depot or Lowes. That should do it!

If the crack is all the way through, then you need to grind it out all the way down to the earth. Grind it wide as well 4-5 inches. Then use a combo. of fiberglass mat and chopped mat with good quality resin between each layer of mat until uou are almost even with the origional gel coat. Sand smmoth and apply the gel coat and hardner with a roller, brush, plastic auto body applicator or you can use a 'pre val" aerosol sprayer all sold at your home depot stores. The gel coat you may purchace at a marine supply house. Most whites are about the same. If it is blue or some other color you will most likely have to get some from the pool manufacturer if you can determine who made the pool. Sand the gel coat until smooth with 300 grit and finish with 1000 wet for optimum finish results.

This will make the repair as good as new, question is did you loose some of the support material behind it? If you did, the repair may not last. Tap on the shell and see if it sounds hollow before making the repair. If it does, you may have to really open up the hole and pump something in behind it to give it support. Maybe some expanding foam?
