Whirlpool Tub Pump Is Overheating

Hello! I recently purchased a used "Whirlpool Cielo" corner whirlpool tub and I just started using it. It works great at first, then the pump keeps shutting off after a few minutes. I would imaging that is the pump overheating and shutting off. It has plenty of air around it for circulation and I checked to make sure it was the proper voltage and it is. Any thoughts? Here are the pump specs. if that helps:

ITT Industries Hydro Air

Gemini Plus Pump Series

Model R125A-C

1 1/4 HP

120V, 10.5 amps

1 phase

50/60 hz

I checked the voltage on the plug that it is plugged into and it shows 120. It is also a dedicated circuit so I am unsure as to what can cause this. Bad impeller? Bearing? Please help!

thanks!

Tony

as Spa God said, check ventilation which you can easily troubleshoot by leaving the door off to see if problem goes away. Next check voltage while under load. Voltage really shouldn't drop below 113 vac to keep things running properly. If the pump turns itself off then after it cools down, restarts, then it is most likely the thermal protection switch cutting out then resetting as it cools. This can be caused by low voltage, bad bearings, improperly sized impeller, even a faulty thermal protection switch. An amprobe reading can clue you into whether it is a voltage or impeller problem. The bearings may be shot but you may not know how quiet it is supposed to sound if they aren't. The amprobe reading on the pump alone, if everything is normal , should be under 10.5 amps while running on high speed. Anyways ...good luck
